Pierre LeBrun @PierreVLeBrun
That conditional third in ‘21 becomes a 2nd RD pick if either Clifford re-signs with the Leafs OR Campbell wins a certain amount of games .... Kings are guaranteed at least the 3rd Rd pick if neither of those conditions are met

They have a pretty promising guy in the AHL named Cal Petersen.

Thought that they would've rather add to their defense more than anything but they technically have some forward pieces to address that if it becomes possible.

If Campbell wins 6 games this year the 2021 becomes a 2nd.

I know he's supposed to be promising, but his stats look shockingly pedestrian.
25 years old, in 37 AHL games this year he has a 3.43 GAA and a 0.906 SV%.
The other #1 goalies (or 1A/1B for Stockton) for the team's in Ontario's division:
Ivan Prosvetov (5 years younger): 19 games. 2.40 GAA, 0.928 SV%
Artem Zagidulin (1 year younger): 23 games. 3.00 GAA, 0.900 SV%
Jon Gillies (1 year older): 21 games. 2.42 GAA, 0.913 SV%
Adam Werner (4 years younger): 26 games. 2.86 GAA, 0.911 SV%
Anthony Stolarz (1 year older): 29 games. 2.79 GAA, 0.919 SV%
Stuart Skinner (4 years younger): 31 games. 3.20 GAA, 0.896 SV%
Josef Korenar (4 years younger): 24 games. 3.13 GAA, 0.887 SV%
I guess I'm just surprised because Jack Campbell has looked good to great in the NHL. Last year on an awful Kings team, he put up a 2.30 GAA and 0.928 SV% in 31 games.
Obviously they're stuck with Quick and if the plan is for Petersen then Campbell has to go.

I agree with AC. It'd be like if the Flames were committed to Talbot long-term and were so enthralled with Jon Gillies in the minors that they trade Rittich for two thirds.

I'm curious how that works...I feel like there is a moratorium on when a newly signed summer UFA can be traded (Dec. 1 of that year?). Maybe it's different when extending with a team? Maybe the player can consent?
Maybe it's just a self-governing thing, where GMs won't take the reputation hit from doing something greasy like trading a guy they just signed [against their wishes].
I wondered this about Kovalchuk, though he is likely OK with being traded, does he have any control over where?

I'll wait and see how he does to judge them...Leafs can blame the goalie all they want but they give up tons of chances.

Good news for the Flames not having to face Campbell next week.

Can we deduce anything from Clifford going to Toronto and Burke saying on TV the flames are shopping Bennett hard?

Explain please. No idea how they correlate!
Campbell and 3rd round pick(s) were the key piece for Leafs. No?
Clifford was a throw in .

I don't think the Leafs getting Clifford was some random throw-in/contract dump. I've seen it reported that Toronto had made multiple attempts at acquiring him over the last two seasons, presumably to help replace Matt Martin at a cheaper dollar figure.

#1 Goaltender

Excellent deal for the Leafs.
Not only do they get the goaltender they have been badly in need of, but they also get a very servicable player in Kyle Clifford whom Dubas has been pursuing for quite some time. All for a reasonable price.
Clifford made the decision to go all-in on prolonging his career a couple seasons ago and the hard work he has put in has paid off tremendously as he has evolved from purely a utility agitator to an agitator who can play a regular 3rd or 4th line shift and isn't afraid to mix things up with anyone. He is also one of the preeminent "room guys" in the entire league which will be welcomed in that dressing room.

With Campbell already having a 1.65m extension in place for the next two seasons, this makes the Leafs cap situation even more interesting next year as they now have just shy of $70m committed to just 14 players.

A couple more interesting tidbits about this deal.
In 2011, when Kyle Dubas was GM of the OHL's Soo Greyhounds, he traded two players (including Pat Sieloff) and six draft picks to the Windsor Spitfires for... Jack Campbell.
Furthermore, when he was a player agent, Dubas' first client was... Kyle Clifford.

Petersen looked really good against the Flames last year (though he lost because his Kings only managed 14 shots).

Campbell looked awesome in a 42 save shutout against the Flames last year.
.944 SV% overall against the Flames in 5 games.

Also the first book Dubas read was Clifford the Big Red Dog.
