They are human beings. From ~age 15 until their late 20s most of them have very little say in where they live. Damn right they should be able to negotiate that security if they so choose.

And beyond that is the tax situation. If you could have the same contract but have significantly more take home pay, you would at least want that opportunity.

I actually think NTC’s where players can pick and choose where they get traded are ridiculous and completely unfair as clearly there’s markets that are on there a lot more than others. I think it would be better for the league if teams stopped giving them out. I know that’s never going to happen but they are frustrating.

I wish these guys were treated as employees of the NHL and not employees of specific teams. There’s probably some labour law issues there though.
Imagine your current employer walked up to you tomorrow and said, "we're sending you to a city in a different part of the continent, pack your bags and leave now". How would that make you feel?

Well if I was 1 of 700 people good enough in the world to do that job, and there was only 31 offices I guess I would pack up my stuff and move.

And regarding the tax comment from above, after all taxes are calculated Calgary and Edmonton are the 14th lowest tax sites in the NHL cities. Total difference is close but Texas, Florida and Vegas have the lowest because of no State Tax.

Why should that even matter?
I don't care if you're getting paid $100k a year or $10M a year, nobody wants someone else to decide for them where they're going to be working or living 8/12 months of the year.

Lowest overall taxed state is Tennessee, so Nashville would be 1st. No state tax also

Even Edmonton?
To each their own I guess, but I would definitely want a say in where I'm going to be working/living, regardless of how much I was paid.

Yeah, but if my agreement also said that when I reach the age of 27 I could contact every office in the company and play the different offices against each other and end up making like 5 or 10 times more, I'd be like, sure Boss I'll move, 3 cups full sir.

Imagine an employer paying a million a year or more, and there were only around 700 of those jobs, worldwide?. Yup, where do you want me to go? And the cheques will still find me there? Cool.

For $10M a year I will live in a stall in the bathroom at Rogers Place. Seriously, for that kind of money I will live anywhere.
