I really wish the Gio/McDavid play didn't happen, because it's going to dominate the Oilers and probably national media until Saturday and probably beyond.
Its going to distract from the actual story of the Oilers losing again.

Lol, it just makes that much funnier when we beat them again this weekend. If McDavid is really still hot about it, he should challenge Gio to a fight. That's the Oiler code right?

The Gio play is a minor penalty, that's about the extent of it. It wasn't an egregious take out a guys knee situation. I don't think it gets looked at by the league.
Bringing up McDavid's injury from last year is irrelevant. That was just Gio playing normal NHL defense. Unless you think players shouldn't be allowed to impede McDavid going to the net, there was nothing at all wrong there, it just unfortunately resulted in an injury. It doesn't need to be part of this discussion, but people will make it so.
The McDavid injury from last year is just another example of Oiler hypocrosy. They say it was a nothing game and for that reason Gio should not have defended the rush or tried so hard. Well if it was a nothing game, why the hell was McDavid trying so hard? What do you expect from a competitor like Gio?
Maybe next time, don't try and show boat in a nothing game and you won't get your leg broken.
Gio is like Gordie Howe and Kobe Bryant, he just plays hard every shift, doesn't matter the situation, he's a competitor through and through so you better not expect anything less.

And it seems to happen with Gio a bit too frequently for my liking.
Kinda like how Gordie Howe's elbows always end up in an opposition players face? Yeah, screw the rest of you whiners. Gio competes hard, if you don't like, stay clear and don't try and beat him.
Wish Hanifin had the same competitive fire. Letting a scrub like Benning walk him like that is the bigger travesty.

Makes sure implies premeditation that is why I am uncomfortable with that language, even in my defence of Gio, it is never fair to assume what a player is thinking. Reckless, that I can agree with. In all of these incidence, except for Aho, Gio positions himself dangerously.
It's a matter of what you think of Gio. There are a lot of people who feel that because it happens so frequently that it is premeditated by him.
I flip-flop on this because sometimes, like that Koivu one, it sure feels like he knows exactly what he is doing.

Kneeing and elbowing have never been seen as in the same light. Even now, knowing what we know about concussions I think a guy who hangs his knee on purpose all the time would be seen as absolute scum vs a guy who led with his elbows.
The Gio play, to me, was a 2 minute minor that was missed. I don’t think he stuck his knee out. It was incidental contact but still a penalty.
I agree. But that was also one of those calls that gets missed with regularity, just because the game is so fast.
Oilers fans freak out about a supposed bounty of missed calls suffered by poor McHobo because he is just so damn fast. Well, settle in, because this is both the advantage and the drawback of having a player who skates like McFroZone: his speed gives him an advantage, and will often result in drawing calls; but it also means that officials are going to miss stuff because it's impossible to catch everything at that pace.

Edmonton "journalists" say "they tied," can't pronounce the name of an All Star goaltender and are very eager to talk about how bad the goals Rittich let in were.
Just to add here. Last night was annoying because they completely ignored events that happened, but were in favor of the Flames while manufactured events to talk up the Oilers or diss the Flames.
Where was the talk about Gagner making the most dangerous play of the game? Would anyone be surprised is he got a fine or a game for it?
Where was the extended analysis of the puck on the goal line? They usually discuss such things between periods.
Where was the outrage for Nurse running Chucky in to the boards?
Smith trapazoid infraction?
Instead they talk about the "almost" trip by Gio,
Lol, not only was there no analysis of the no goal... but we were told that the refs had a really good look at it. We know this because of how little time they spent looking at it.
We also got to listen to the broadcast get upset over a missed high-sticking call, to later excuse his misjudgement by claiming that the puck hit him in the face. This while a replay of his teammate high-sticking him plays on our screens.
I will criticize the Flames-tilted version of this as well if it ever existed, as I'll like to watch good knowledgable insight and chatter about the game... not gaslighting into thinking the game went one way.

Now your frothing at the mouth hyperbole, has taken away any logic in your posting.
Over his career it's happened arguably, 4-5 times.
In that time, Gio has had 1,000 documented hits.
So yeah, you're right. The data show, ALL THE TIME.
take a walk.

Yep, if the roles were reversed no question that gets brought up. Cutting the replay while the puck was still moving on the goal line was pretty amateur too.
I get last night's broadcast being biased towards the Oilers since it's their crew and they don't know how to be professional. But there's no excuse for it to not be neutral on Saturday. But I'm already expecting it to be another pro-Oilers gushfest like the last game in Calgary.

Anyone who plays a physical style of play for nearly 14 seasons is going to have a laundry list of questionable hits. The recency of the Koivu incident casts gio ( rightfully) in a poor light. Gio is not a Stirling player, but he not made a career out of hurting players.

Well, no. We know this because the puck was unambiguously on the goal-line, as multiple camera views which appeared on the broadcast clearly showed. What would there be to discuss?

Yup should have been a penalty for sure. However I don't think he was trying to injure McD. When you have some bearing down on you with that kind of speed and he cuts one way then goes around you the other way, it's natural to kind of twist your body to stop him. Unfortunately that sometimes means body parts that aren't supposed to be used get used. Gio plays hard and isn't going to let anyone go around him like that without attempting to stop them.
Gio also has a history of doing this on occasion, so I don't blame anyone who points the finger at him. It's blind homerism to suggest he has no history of doing this and we should all ignore it. I'd also like to see another angle if possible. I've only ever seen the one replay during the game and nothing has been posted here other then a single photo so hard to make any kind of judgement.
However the league hasn't said anything so IMO that means it's not as malicious as other fans are saying. And that's with Parros and what I'd imagine to be many higher ups in the league watching closely. No harm so it's all good, but IMO that was as borderline as it gets.

Oh god, I think you'd lose an IQ point a minute watching that...

The normal side camera view made it seem like a goal. I thought for sure it was in. But the overhead clearly showed it wasn't. It also showed a tiny patch of snow that slightly impeded the puck as it was moving over the line, enough to slow it down. The announcer's even mentioned it. But the overhead view was a clear no goal, so not much to discuss.
