I was wondering what the risks are and did some googling. It appears that helicopters are somewhere between 8 time safer and 27 times more dangerous. The one study puts private self owned planes comparable to cars.

Helicopters are clearly safer than motorcycles.

A lot of this is napkin math. I couldn’t find good info comparing the to do in my googling.

Wonder if the fog had anything to do with the crash?

I'm sure we'll find out soon enough.

More just comparing how I felt after hearing the news. Someone I admired so much passing away so young and abruptly. The shocking news of it all.

Some witnesses said they heard the chopper sputtering a struggling to maintain altitude before it crashed. It would be strange for dual turbine engines to both malfunction like that but it could happen. They're much more reliable than the piston engines. At least that's what my helicopter friends told me last year.

Eyewitness Jerry Kocharian, 62, said he was standing outside the Church in the Canyon drinking coffee when he heard a helicopter that was flying unusually low and seeming to struggle.
“It wasn’t sounding right,” he said, “and it was real low. I saw it falling and spluttering. But it was hard to make out as it was so foggy.”

Man, I love your Bluejays takes, but I really hate this new trend of making controversial/aggressive/decisive comments on a discussion and basically proclaiming that the reason it is or will be poorly received is because of political correctness.

Political correctness is this annoying thing that came from American liberals pushing too far to be inclusive to the point of bullying everyone who didn't fit in with every social issue, but it's not the correct term when you're just saying something that isn't to be well received.

We need to be better than this as a society if we have any hope of moving forward with discussion online.

Complete shock. This wasn’t just a famous celebrity or a really good athlete. Kobe was an icon that transcended basketball and even sports.

I wasn’t even a big Kobe fan back when he played but certainly recognized his accomplishments on and off the court. One of my favourite stories I read about him on the Players Tribune a few years back: https://www.theplayerstribune.com/en...ng-kobe-bryant

So sad and tragic for his family.

Man this is ridiculous, Leo Rautins was friends with Kobe’s dad, and knew Kobe as a child for christ sakes. Rautins and Devlin were brilliant today, and I take it the NBA has no bereavement policy, considering how they played on despite the obvious grief from many players and team staff.

Yeah, but let's not pile on Fleury, he's a really good poster, this was just an out of touch take for a legendary player passing away in a tragedy hours before the game.

If we were all curb stomped for the occasional poor take then we'd all be curb stomped.

Fleury, to put it in perspective, imagine if Mario Lemieux, Bobby Orr or Wayne Gretzky passed away in a helicopter crash right before an NHL game, how the broadcast would go. And those guys are way more removed from their last game than Kobe.

Once the batteries are in the sock it's too late to go back.

What hits home for me, now that the day is over, is he was traveling to a travel basketball game with his child and another family.

I don’t know how many times I have done that, just not in a helicopter.

It brought me back to the Humboldt tragedy and how youth sports are such a big part of many parent/child’s life. Doesn’t matter how famous or rich you are.

Just makes it all the more tragic.

Words from the Lakers biggest fan --- Jack Nicholson

“Where everything was solid, there’s just a hole in the wall.”

Nicholson reminisced, recalling the first time he met a young Bryant: “I remember him in totality as just how great a player he was. But you know I teased him the first time we met. It was in the (Madison Square) Garden in New York and I offered him a basketball and asked him if he wanted me to autograph it for him. He looked at me like I was crazy.”

With respect to the Leo Rautins connection to Kobe's dad, yes, that definitely makes sense and I totally understand that he was in shock and going through the mourning process on air. I didn't want anything I said to be controversial (especially in this thread and situation). We all use sports and other entertainment as an escapism from daily life and of course given Rautins long time connection to him he'd feel especially badly, so I guess that part got away from me, so my apologies.

Apparently there's a radio transmission of his helicopter with air traffic control (I guess?) It doesn't point to one thing in particular though one of the last communications from ATC was they were possibly too low (though some in the comments point to that as transmission and not altitude). Do helicopters have black boxes?

Before I went to sleep last night I threw my napkin into the trash bin yelling out “Kobe!”. I teared up a bit afterwards.
