There were two players who simply by watching play would make you a better player. Like you just had to watch Kobe play and you'd immediately be better the next time you played. It's just the way he moved, his confidence. MJ and Kobe. They're like cats. Once in a while you could take a shot with a mental image of Kobe fading away and like magic it's a swish.



His first few games were so funny...just a kid throwing up whatever he could think of. Traveling. Air balls. But that movement. There was a real difference between him and everybody else. And that game he ruptured his achilles tendon. If you rupture your achilles you're in a pile on the ground until someone scoops you onto a cart and heads to the locker room. Kobe gets up and shoots two free throws and then walks off the court like he's mad about tweaking his ankle. Riposare in Pace Mamba Nero.

You feel really bad for him and his family. Aside from that incident in the 2000's, the guy certainly seemed like a hard working family guy. As a basketball player how could he not be in the top 5 all time? He was the most clutch player of my generation.


On a side note, I thought watching today's Raptors broadcast was aggravating to say the least. We get that everyone had ties to the guy, but when there wasn't a full minute going by where they were constantly talking about how down both teams are, it really was time to switch to CNN or whatever to watch the coverage. Certainly they were slow at the start, but at the end of the game when SA came back from 20, you mean to tell me both teams don't care about the game? It was solemn moping and to me you just wanna watch the game in peace with the obvious pointing of the elephant in the room, but to talk about how down the players are every minute which substantially too much, especially when you had the beginning of the show which addressed it, and the intermissions as well. Anyway, peace to the family, because it was many lives cut too short.

The first year I played basketball was as a 10-year old in 1996, the same year Kobe started in the NBA. MJ was obviously a legend, but we all loved Kobe more, because he was young and exciting and awesome. The yellow Bryant 8 jersey was ubiquitous in my school.

What a tragedy. As a father, I think first of his daughters and wife. Their lives are in pieces. And my thoughts are also with the families of the other unfortunate souls on that helicopter. Life is abjectly unfair sometimes.

Doesn’t exactly address the need to talk about the obvious every minute. It’s not to say they should’ve ignored it, but talk about it and move to the game. It was over the top. I know it’s not the politically correct thing to say about the commentary but it is what it was.

The Raptors barely tweeted about the game. Everything is about Kobe today, especially in basketball. Not only that, the Raptors game started like half an hour after the news came out. The players were visibly shaken and emotional and the atmosphere in the arena was charged with grief.

It's easy to sit in an armchair and question certain choices made in the broadcast, but you have to remember that the commentators were there, privy to that emotional atmosphere first-hand, and their job was to comment on the events in the building. And despite the game being played, the shadow the death of Kobe cast has greatly overshadowed everything today.

It's not, but Halladay died at age 40 not too long ago in a plane crash. You wonder about these small crafts and the danger that they may pose as athletes use them more and more.

Small crafts??? It was a regular sized helicopter

I’m hearing he lived in Newport Beach and commuted to LA daily by copter. Daily routine for him.

Owning or chartering a copter is super expensive, but one way to avoid traffic in LA.

That was not the best example. But there are lots of celebrities who have died in small, private plane crashes. I'd assume it's a much greater risk than flying commercial.

This is so sad. The more I think about it the sadder I get. His poor wife and kids. Just heartbreaking thinking that one day you're saying bye to your husband/father, and before the day is even done you have his funeral to think about. So sad.

The man was a living icon. When I think basketball, I think Kobe. Picking my favorite player in any NBA video game, it's Kobe. Watching NBA highlights, it's Kobe. Heck when I think of sports and athletes in general, Kobe is at the top of the list. Even in his very last game, the man put up 60 points. He's probably the most clutch athlete I've ever watched. You just knew you could depend on him for the buzzer beater or to carry his team to a win.

I'm watching some of his highlights now and still can't believe it . RIP Kobe.

I was wondering what the risks are and did some googling. It appears that helicopters are somewhere between 8 time safer and 27 times more dangerous. The one study puts private self owned planes comparable to cars.

Helicopters are clearly safer than motorcycles.
