The gift that keeps giving. The Flames are still on the hook for $1.5 million a season for two more seasons after this one for this guy. NHL GM's are the worst.

Tank Commander Brouwer is not needed on the Cup defending team?
 Shocking I tell you.

I think we should claim him solely for the fact it would be hilarious to have not one but 2 players we are paying to both play on our team and also not play on our team.

Guy does not have it anymore. Last year he was decent, produced at the same rate as Lucic for example but this year he really dropped off. Missing training camp probably hurt him. Forever a Flame though as he will be on the Flames books for six years when all is said and done

Buying out Brouwer was the classic 2 wrongs don’t make a right.
Luckily can’t imagine we’ll go for the triple.

Signing James Neal seems like it was the triple (although it happened 1 month before the buyout, they're inextricably linked).

Brouwer ended up outproducing Neal last year. I know I was leaning towards 1 more year (and a presumable buyout before this season, or salary retained trade + pick)

The Catapult is the NHL and Homer is Troy Brouwer.

And this works on a lot more levels concerning Troy Brouwer's recent NHL history if you know how this episode ends, which you should considering it aired 23 years ago.

I don't have time to do this right now, but could someone please draw up what our roster looks like if Brad simply doesn't sign players in the first week of free agency?

No Lucic, but also no Derek Ryan or Cam Talbot. Those would be two big losses, Ryan especially. Hard to say if Michael Stone would be here, either.

Also, no Alan Quine, Buddy Robinson, Justin Kirkland, Austin Czarnik, Brandon Davidson, etc

Do you mean retroactively?

No Mason Raymond means we keep Paul Byron.

No Derek Engelland means we lose someone else to Vegas...

No Jonas Hiller means we probably don't make the playoffs, win a round, and accelerate the expectations on this team, and a lot of the more aggressive moves that have shaped this roster (Hamilton, Hanifin, Lindholm).

Most likely we're in the 7-10 range that year (Provorov, Werenski, Meier, or Rantanen)...maybe we pick even higher (Hanifin), or maybe BT still makes the Hamilton trade.

Still likely we pick Andersson, Kylington, and Mangiapane.

That's all from BT's first summer...pretty hard to ret-con from there. Maybe he still wants to sign a guy like Frolik that summer (though perhaps less likely if Byron thrives in CGY as he did in MTL, and/or we have Meier/Rantanen). No Frolik could have pretty significant impacts on Backlund (one could argue he really came into his own once Frolik arrived) and Tkachuk (assuming we still ended up with him, though I think it would have taken a lot to stifle his development).

It's more to do with 30+ year old players in the first week of free agency. Ryan was in his early 30's but he was a low mileage player and the deal was 3 years which is probably the most you want to give any new to the team UFA player in his 30's. UFA's still in their 20's are a different story as most don't fall off the cliff until their 30's.

Ignoring the butterfly effect on stuff like draft position, and ignoring stuff aimed at the AHL, you miss out on Talbot, Ryan, Czarnik, Quine, Hiller, Engelland, and the Chad, all of whom have contributed in a positive way in some fashion. And you have the massive failures of Neal and Brouwer. The thing is, I suspect Treliving had more competition to sign the latter two. And on paper they looked like fairly safe signings. Neither had had a significant dip in production year to year, neither were old, and both seemed to fill a need for a big scoring winger.
On Brouwer, it's kinda too bad he went out with a whimper. I don't think he was a bad dude. I didn't question his effort - the game just seemed to get too fast for him suddenly. If he was put on McDavid's PP like Neal, I'm betting he'd stuff in goals the same way.
