What about leasing if you use your car a TON for work?
Better to buy? I don't like the idea of having to purchase extra KMs; is there any other way to do it?

My dad leased a car several years ago and was forced to end up using it for courier work for a while. The car was wrote off in an accident about 6 months before the lease expired and the insurance took care of the rest of the lease etc. A month or so later they sent him a bill for ~12k for the km he racked up on the car despite the fact that the car was sitting in the scrap yard.
Lesson learned: Always know what your actual KM use will be, and what it costs when you go over that.

If a car is in very high demand and basically sold out.. They are not very likely to give you a deal as there are 10 people behind you that will pay full price. You might be able to get a couple of accessorires or somthing thoough.
If you want a deal you need to buy something off of the lot.

Here's one. Is the extended warranty really as much of a rip off as I think it is? When we bought our current car, I let my wife talk me into it--but a new car, well maintained, etc. shouldn't have any problems. And guess what? Our car has not needed a single out-of-the-ordinary repair. Just your usual wear and tear stuff. So now when I see that extra 20 dollars on the monthly payment, it makes me want to cry.

What about rust protection, undercoating, fabric guard and all that other stuff that they only told me about after I signed? I opted for none of them by the way. Smart move?

Are rattles covered under warranty? I have a 2006 Vibe and when I hit around 3500 RPM and up in 3rd gear I get a very loud rattle coming from the centre of the dash up by the window. I'm sure they'll say it's caused by my intake and exhaust though because the tone is louder.

Don't buy any of it.. huge profit centre for dealers. You can get it done cheaper yourself. And besides if you are only going to keep a car for 3 or 4 years why would you car about rust protection.. Most manufacturer have a 4 or 5 year rust warranty anyway.

I asked the same damn thing.....He's avoiding the question!
C'mon Tim admit it....It's profit insurance that basically needs to only work once for one customer to give you something to sell the consumer. If all buyers of new cars all agreed to contribute say $8 a month into a communal fund and anyone who needs major repairs within the time of the extended warranty period can take from that fund to pay for those repairs. I bet that fund would still have money in 5 years and be able to pay back some type of dividend to everyone who paid into it, plus pay for any repairs that people needed.

Depends on the car maker..
with Mercedes for example the 1st year to 20,000km is what we call the adjustment period. all rattles etc are covered.. after that generally warranty will not pay to fix squeaks and rattles.

Extended Warranty is one of those things. It is hard to pay for but with todays cars there are so many electronics that can get expensive to replace. It is a personal call. It is a profit centre to be sure though. Also be careful of some of the 3rd party warranty companies make sure it is a well established one. Go with a manufacture backed one if you can. MB for example has Star Certified. It is from MB so there is not much chance of them not being aroudn to honor it. Also some of them have payout limits be careful of them.
As and aside when i bought my wifes MB SUV i did buy the MB extended warranty. It was not cheap but personally i think it is good value and it will only help when i go to sell the car..

If you were to be upfront about the car, all costs with purchasing it,
warranties, cash-back that you receive from the manufacturer,
performance, service, etc., I would have no problem giving you the
8%. I give a helluva lot more than that on other stuff I purchase,
and given that I will pay extra for good service, I have no qualms about it.
However, when I go into a dealer, I am consistently lied to about the
car; it's warranty, extra costs at time of purchase, service, and maybe
about the features of the car itself, then I really don't want to pay you
8%. At that point I don't even care that you break even.
Go to another dealer? Sure, and get the same hassle.
Why is it that I can haggle for 30 min and get $2,000 off? Why didn't
you give me that up front, and save me my time?
Oh wait...you want us, the buyer, to be honest, and think about you,
while you can mangle what you call honesty all you want, and think
about yourselves.
I've purchased 2 new cars in my life, from different manufacturers.
I will never own another new car in my life. I'll go used, private sale,
thank you.

###.
Although this is primarily a problem with GM, Chrysler & Ford. Haven't seen it with BMW, Volkswagen or MB.

A friend of mine somehow got a screaming deal on a Jeep TJ...he was able to get a break on the price by buying a car from a future shipment to the lot...somehow it was an advantage to the dealer...does that make any sense? If I am willing to wait for a car (that is not in high demand) is there a way to get a better price?
and....
Why are cars in Canada so overpriced? Looking at cars in the US and even after shipping, taxes, duties, hassle etc. you can save about 10% or more...

It is not so much that Canadian cars are overpriced it is that US cars are underpriced.
If you compare Canaada to the rest of the world our prices are in line.
The US needs to up there prices a significant amount but they can't
It has been my experience that you will always get a better deal on something that is in the yard.. Once it is in the yard we own it and are making interest payments on it.

gotta disagree on that, Tim. Most manufacturers have corrected for the difference between the US and Canadian currencies. Some have not. My father bought a Lexus in Las Vegas for more than $20,000 less than he would have in Canada, that is including taxes, duty and registering the vehicle in Alberta.
