Pittsburgh, Chicago, Washington, LA basically won all the cups over the last decade. People keep pointing to St Louis but that is a massive anomaly. All the teams that win usually have generational players or are stacked.

With the goal tending the Flames are getting they would be a very good team by adding a talented forward or two

Are we really scared of anyone in the Pacific? Flames might blow it but none of the teams are scary good

Well in your example, the Kings were about 50-50 drafted versus acquired players, all through the roster when they first won the cup. And for their first cup they made the key acquisition of Carter. Their second one they added Gaborik.

Not to mention they won one of those Cups as an 8th seed.

What about Dadonov from the panthers, he has 37 points this season? He is RW but shoots L unfortunately but could be a nice add? What do panthers fans think I wonder.

Purely as a rental, send over a 3rd round pick for him?

Remember when we were all jumping up and down and calling ourselves contenders after acquiring Ville Nieminen and Chris Simon?

Both ended up being HUGE in the playoffs

28 goals, 70 points last season - 20 goals in 46 this year.
If made available you are likely looking at a late 1st+ or a Pelletier like prospect to get any serious conversations going.

He seems like a guy who will stick around in Florida.

They never work but not against adding Toffoli if it's really cheap.
So in that same line of thinking, you believe the Lightning should blow it up and sell?

Stuff happens, Capitals went for it two years ago, failed, and won the cup in what was supposed to be a transition year.

Flames finished 2nd last year in the regular season, leads their division that has 8 teams in it, and we are supposed to blow it up and build through the draft

He is 29 and a UFA though, so maybe we can pry him out of there for less than that price. Can only pray that BT can use his wizards skills to make something like that happen. Lol.

If you can get him without giving up a Valimaki, Pelletier or 1st you do that without hesitation. I just don't see it - Florida is right in the thick of things and hold games in hand.

He'd be a decent option to look at in FA should he make it there. Would be a wonderful fit next to Johhny.

So, Florida who is 9 games above .500 and currently in a playoff spot based on winning %, will be trading a cheap winger on pace for 35 goals and 66 points for a 3rd rounder?

That pace is marginally ahead of the top Calgary players.

There is no reason for the Panthers to likely trade him, he's important to their success. And the cost would likely be a first round pick, perhaps even plus. He also has a modified NTC.

I could see the Panthers trading Dadonov for some defensive help, a real hockey trade, but I don't know what they would accept. Would Hamonic be enough? Possibly. Both are middle of the roster players.

Just know this Flames fans, Dadonov is not the strongest defensive player and often is lazy in coverage. I'm not sure he's a fit for what the Flames are trying to build, and he DEFINITELY cannot play with Gaudreau since he's also quite weak defensively.

Don't get me wrong, I like him, but you'd have to be comfortable giving up something significant to get him out of there when they're in a playoff race.

I never said anything about drafted vs acquired though.

My point is more so to the misconception that you get in and anything can happen. I think the vast majority of the time that isn't true. Teams that win have generational players/superstars/are insanely deep.

Yes the only team in the history of the league. Good strategy.

I think Kapanen is the best target potentially available for the Flames but not sure what gets it done. Hamonic and Bennett would interest the Leafs adding a shutdown right shot and gritty winger. I think that makes the Flames too soft. If they could do Hamonic+Jankowski for Kapanen and either retain on Hamonic or take Ceci back that would be ideal. Flames can even add a draft pick.

Hate to bleed picks but:

Hamonic+Jankowski+3rd for Kapanen
2nd+Gawdin for Toffoli

Tkachuk-Lindholm-Kapanen
Gaudreau-Monahan-Toffoli
Bennett-Backlund-Mangipane
Dube-Ryan-Lucic

Giordano-Brodie
Hanifin-Andersson
Kylington-Stone
Valimaki (moves up once healthy)
