Like a broken record, Flames need someone to replace Backlund on top line. There is zero chemistry on the top line for the longest time since before Ferland caught fire on the top line 3 calendar years ago and after his 1.5, Lindholm last year.

Whatever it takes to win, Rittich didn’t let in a poor one for the first time in 3 or 4 games, and some very good big saves, helping negate the terrible non calls on grabby Leafs in OT specifically.
Backlund and Monahan have had some good give and gos.

I think that the alignment of the centre position might have the effect of sparking the offence a bit.

Gaudreau-Lindholm (proven chemistry)
Tkachuk-Monahan (look good every time we see it, which is rare)
Lucic-Ryan (minute eaters in the offensive zone)

Personally, I would place Bennett-Backlund- Mangiapane on the right side in that order, to add the right size dynamic to each line. Right side is an afterthought on this team.

If the Flames have a chance to get Gallant (or Laviolette), they should not waste a second and jump at the opportunity.

It's incredible how impactful goalies have on the image of their coach. A team could be playing great 5v5 and playing great defense but getting awful goaltending (like Vegas) or they could be playing poor 5v5 and playing poor defense but getting excellent goaltending (like Calgary under Ward).

Big Save Dave put on a show these last 2 games.

"All-Star" and "David Rittich" sound really good together
Did you not make almost this exact same post in another thread in the last day or 2?

I don't know if you're hating Ward or liking Rittich with this post, but I'm leaning towards hating Ward.

Rittich has stopped 70 of 73 shots (.959 save percentage) over the last two games and it took us a shootout to get 2 points.

Please, offense...

Do something.

Our goaltending has been phenomenal

Yea something gotta change, our D structure is giving up lots of chances, were not getting a ton of offensive chances... And the PP might need to rotate some parts around

Thank goodness for the goaltending tonight but 2 points is 2 points finish strong in Ottawa

FWIW, Calgary really dominated OT. They were also much the better team in the first after a rough start.

I think Backlund hasn’t worked out on the wing on the top line, and I really thought it would work. I’d like to see Dube on that line. I like his doggedness and his north south play. I think he’s got defensive chops to make it work, along with Monahan’s improved defensive play.

I think looking to hire a guy like Gallant who will have a fresh perspective on things and how to get the offensive game going would really help this team. I'm a HUGE fan of how Vegas played the game in their first couple seasons. That north-south, relentless attack is the kind of model the Flames need to adapt here as I think it plays to the strengths of their best players as well.

Ward has been great as an interim, but I don't know if from a strategic standpoint he has the ability and ideas to get the most out of this team's offence.

How great has Derek Ryan been offensively at 5v5 this season?

5th on the team in G/60 (0.73)
1st on the team in A/60 (1.25)
3rd on the team in Primary Assists/60 (0.62)
1st on the team in Points/60 (1.97)

Phenomenal.

Happy for Ward that he is getting a hell of a run of goaltending, he seems like a good dude that has paid his dues.

Ryan has been great. But it is deeply troubling if he is leading your team in very many scoring statistics...

Yup.

But apparently me comparing him to our top guys is me being out of line and negative.
