Honestly this is the kind of coach that Treliving should be talking to right now. If they wait until the offseason he'll be gone. Ward has done a good job as the interim, but Gallant is a top tier coach.

Since Ward took over the Flames have been 10 points better. I would suggest that Vegas has a more complete roster too

Great article from Darren Haynes showing why Flames fans shouldn't be as convinced in Geoff Ward as most seem to be just because of his record.
https://theathletic.com/1532591/2020...mes-right-now/
If the Flames have a chance to get Gallant, they should not waste a second and jump at the opportunity.
It's incredible how impactful goalies have on the image of their coach. A team could be playing great 5v5 and playing great defense but getting awful goaltending (like Vegas) or they could be playing poor 5v5 and playing poor defense but getting excellent goaltending (like Calgary under Ward).

Interestingly Duhatschek considers Deboer a top 5 coach in the league.

can anyone cite some recent examples of an interim coach not having the interim tag removed for his name?

VGK Fires Gerard Gallant, Peter DeBoer named Head Coach
My biggest concern with Gallant would be he doesn’t seem to mesh real well with finesse, skill players.
Tatar, Shipachyov, and Gusev were all run out of town by him.
To be fair, Tatar is really the only one to make him look silly for it though. Gusev is fine, and Shipachyov immediately left for Russia (has been over a PPG since returning though). You could also argue Gusev was just a victim of the salary cap.
His Florida teams performed average at best and immediately after he left Huberdeau and Barkov exploded offensively.
He seems to go against management a little too. Vegas traded a first, second, and third for Tatar which is a high price to pay only to have him healthy scratched for over half of their playoff games.
With that being said you can’t argue with his results.

Comments from Stone after they lost to Buffalo suggest he thinks the team is underachieving. Gallant takes the hit I guess. They were in the process of negotiating an extension a couple weeks ago, so they were in a bit of a tough spot - either you call off negotiations which is a bad sign and makes him a lame duck, give him a year, which is not exactly a vote of confidence either, give him term, which ties your hands (and maybe pisses off certain players), or you cut bait now. They chose the latter.

Well you have two very good coaches out there.
Are you going to buy into two months of Ward under whom the outcomes have gone their way but the level of play has at times left much to be desired and bank on him the rest of the way, or do you get a step ahead for upcoming seasons and bring in a vet with a strong resume? Good chance one if not both have gigs after the season is done.

would the flames consider going with three coaches over the course of one season?

Given how quickly he was re-hired, that certainly seems to be the perception of him.

DeBoer is able to impact the teams he's coaching quickly. The Devils and Sharks both made the finals in his first year with each team.

It may not be that far off. DeBoer has had two SC finals appearances in the past eight years, and won two rounds behind the bench last year in SJ with an aging team on the brink of decline. A coach can only do so much, and the Sharks don't look like they were going anywhere this year.
