You can also play offline and the game is the same without human players(PMC or SCAV) which is great for learning maps, safely playing with gear before using in a live raid.
SCAV runs (The bad guys) are a good way to get free loot as you zone in with random gear and anything you leave with can be transferred to your PMC (Main Character)
When playing as a PMC you have a small safe container that whatever items are put into it you keep which is good for quest items or expensive items you find like Labs keycards which people also take advantage of doing "hatchet" runs where you zone in with only your hatchet which you can't lose and search for loot to safely stash. This used to be done a lot more before they added the need to heal before next raid feature. Also there is insurance so you can insure whatever gear you want before a raid and if no one successfully extracts with it you will get it back in about 8-10 hours depending on who you use and what your level with them is. A good strat if playing with someone and they die is to take their gear and ditch it in a bush for them.
Last patch they also added the hideout which you upgrade to do different things including a shooting range for gun testing, making currency, meds, etc.
I don't play nearly as much as I would like and I still have so much to learn but I can extract fairly consistent and there is no shame in hiding while sweaty players fight it out and then moving in to grab the scraps as there isn't enough room for them to take everything.
You will die a lot, you will get frustrated a lot but those times you succeed you forget the bad times.
