The thing is, he does "answer the bell". He did with Clifford after hitting doughty, and I'm pretty sure a couple other times. Id like to think he doesnt do it against the oilers because it makes their fans and certain players apoplectic, and he thinks it's hilarious.

Exactly. Fighting Kassian is not what he needs to be doing. The only guy on this team who should fight him is Lucic.
And if a guy like Tkachuk does go too far and starts wiring cheques he can't cash, his teammates will tell him. They won't pay the price for a player who does that. Ask Claude Lemieux.

I think if, on the next shift, Kassian would have skated over to Tkachuk and asked Tkachuk to drop the gloves then we could discuss wether he could/should have answered for the hit.
The way Kassian jumped Tkachuk, he never had the opportunity.

While I like your narrative he doesn’t answer the bell vs. The Oilers because there is nothing to answer for. The Oilers simply want to try and neutralize Chuky by having him fight and be off the ice and are trying to justify the strategy and are having a hissy fit because not only is it not working, it’s actually starting to cost them.

Why? Play the game within in the rules yets has to answer for it?? I just don't get this logic. In the NFL after a big hit do we see fight?

I don't know why, specifically in the situation last night, he has to answer the bell at all.
He really doesn't. But it's a moot point anyways because he had no opportunity TO answer due to Kassian attacking him from behind rather than approaching him to his face like a guy that wants to throw down in customary and legal fashion would do.
Kassian didn't give an invitation, he just attacked like a wackjob with a screw loose. That's why the turtling talk is asinine. Did you not see how that unfolded? How does it fall on Tkachuks character for not fighting when he's jumped sans warning.
Come back with turtling insinuations when Kassian actually approaches him after being taunted in some way and motions "let's go" like a guy that plays within the rules, and Tkachuk ducks out. That's when you'll begin to have a point, but you have none based on what happened there.

Some guys are dropping the gloves in that instance no doubt about it. Tkachuk absolutely had a plan and he stuck to it. I give him 100% credit for making that PP happen.

I agree he had a plan, but I fail to see how he had the opportunity to react.

It isn't turtling when you are jumped from behind and horse collared. If caveman wanted to fight, there are ways to engage another player. But instead, he sucker punched Tkatchuk from behind, which seems to be an Oiler thing to do.

Not all fights are two guys talking first. IMO he could have started throwing 'em but decided not to. Maybe it helped his decision that Kassian had such a head start, but he didn't hurt him at all. The linemen were extremely slow to jump in, which I also thought was a bit of a problem when one guy didn't want to fight.

Definitely. And that is why the media (that actually went that way) are completely out to lunch.
But their disdain for Matthew is to the point where it overrode their ability to analyze the series of events with any reason, sense or logic. Looks pretty bad on all of them, tbf.
There are a lot of guys covering this league that are not very good at their jobs it turns out.

I think that the NHL needs to change the suspension rules especially for repeat suspensions. Basically any suspension that you get should be +1 game at least over you're last suspension, and once you hit a 10 game suspension you're season is over.
Kassian should be looking at 9 games under this type of rules. Oh and the suspensions never go away. So the next suspension would be 10 games.

Oh, just to be clear, I think in no way he needed to fight or anything. More like, in the grand scheme of things, when he does something actually dumb that he does answer for it. He did exactly what he needed to last night.

I don’t remember a goon jumping Gilmour or Gretzky or Messier or MacInnis.
I also don’t remember Esa Tikkanen answering the bell for anything, ever. Sheehy fought everyone but turtled to help the Flames beat the oilers.
The world was always inconsistent. It’s not new.
The oilers fans (and media) just need their soothers back.

My view on the hit is that it is more than should be allowed in the NHL. But I know I have a more extreme position on that than most. But it comes down for me about whether the hit was more than required to get the puck back - and it was.
But no question that under the current rules, and based on how the NHL has been calling things - that is a 100% legal hit.

Kassian is twice the size of Tkachuk and no where near his talent level. There’s no reason Tkachuk has to fight Kassian.
