		| "The New Jersey Devils and General Manager Ray Shero have agreed to part ways, effective immediately.
"Ray is a talented hockey executive and I am confident he will have great success in the future. However, Ray and I are in agreement that the Devils need to move in a new direction and that this change is in the best interest of the team.

"In the coming weeks and months, we will be launching a formal search for a new General Manager.

"We are very optimistic about our future and have a lot of talent, both on and off the ice.

"Tom Fitzgerald will serve as interim General Manager and he will receive support from Martin Brodeur, who will serve as an advisor to and on hockey operations.

"Our organization remains deeply committed to creating a sustainably winning franchise. Our fans deserve nothing but the best hockey. We thank them for their continued support as we work toward our goals."

Didn't see that coming. Owner not happy with the return for Hall? Seems like odd timing.

			What the heck?
Maybe the owner really wanted the Devils to at least be fighting for a WC spot this year but haven't met expectations.

IMO probably means that Shero and ownership were not seeing eye to eye.
Likely one side wants to be more aggressive and get out of rebuild mode. The other wants to continue the rebuild and be patient.

Interesting stuff. I've always gotten the impression that Shero is an excellent GM and I was impressed by his offseason moves, but things just didn't work out for him in New Jersey.

My guess is Shero didn't want to go through the rebuild phase. It will take at least 3 years and likely longer.
Shero is in more of a "win now" kind of mind set.

Wonder if Shero was gun shy on some moves and the owners wanted them made.
Odd as he was doing a decent job. Maybe the Hall return wasnt good enough for owners.

Subban having 10 points and Schneider no longer an NHL goalie killed him.

It was probably a more recent dispute between ownership and Shero, because this came out of nowhere. I think he made good moves at the time but for whatever reason the season just didn't work out for him. That happens in sports where things aren't always linear and I don't know why ownership changes the wrong guy for making the right decisions (just bad outcomes), but in this case it certainly appears there was a dispute where they went their separate ways. If I were to guess a landing spot for Shero? Montreal.

			Fallout from the flames offer?
Fallout of tensions between analytics side and old school gm side?

 I think both are likely.

I don't know that it's as simple as him not wanting to do a rebuild, I think it's as simple as the NHL GM landscape is changing and some guys are losing their lustre.

Shero had most of his success from high draft picks the Pens were awarded after being a failure for several years.
He added some good pieces, but he isn't the builder people make him out to be.

I know this is the year of coaches finally paying for their past bad behaviour, but this seems like pretty extreme punishment for that letter Fred Shero sent to the Flyers' players' wives in 1977.
