It's a bit different economics in the AHL. It's a bus league and teams rarely play outside their division. It's essentially four regional leagues under one umbrella.
The Marlies may make one trip outside their division a season. (Stockton, for example traveled to Des Moines to play the Iowa Wild).
It likely makes more dollar sense to forfeit than to make up the game than to budget in another road trip. MLSE could no doubt afford it, but other AHL teams with local ownership might feel the pinch.
