Who cares? I've been smacked in the head before - I doubt a full grown man was hurt by a guy smacking his helmet... everyone's a victim these days.

Or maybe the player (Tkachuk) wanted the bridge anyways so dumping to create cap space in the off-season wasn't something they ended up having to do.
Also, I think you are overly assuming that the deal that presented it's self last week would also have been there in the summer.

Yet the only two Stanley cup parades ever in those states in 2004 and 1999...The Coyotes and Panthers are among the least successful teams in the league...
They also all have something in common that is especially relevant from October-April...

No, he wasn't dumped in the off season because nobody had any cap space. And nobody had any injuries...

Well, no one ever said they were managed well, especially AZ. What we’re focusing on right as far as money and taxes is concerned is Dallas.

Poil has done a good job in the coach hiring department so he knows better than me but I find Hynes a bit of an underwhelming hire. Maybe 2nd time's a charm but sometimes mediocre coaches are just that.

In that case, neither are the Flames though, if we are being honest.

While I’m totally onboard with getting Laviolette, I think there’s a factor that everyone is overlooking.
Will the owners open their wallets to pay millions more for a high end coach?
I know what everyone is thinking, “with a payroll of 100+ million, 4-5 million is a drop in the bucket in the grand scheme of things”. Yes, but it’s still another 4-5 million coming out of someone’s pocket.
If things are going well with an unproven, newly promoted coach, and for arguments sake is making less than a mil a year, You’re looking at spending 5-10 times that much for Laviolette, so is it worth it to spend that much more?
In an Alberta economy where many have lost their jobs and tightening their budget, would we as fans be more willing to come out to more games and making up for that additional 4-5 million spend? For a marquee player, yes. For a coach? I don’t know. Some of us have a hard time justifying paying $150 - 200 for a pair of tickets for one game.
It’s easy to sit back and say “4-5 million for Laviolette? it’s totally worth it!” when it’s someone else’s budget

Off topic a bit,
Things got even worse for SJ last night apparently when Couture looked like he tore his knee up pretty badly.
At least initially it appeared pretty serious.

That's the thing with the Sharks - the older guys they likely want to move have ugly contracts and NTCs, making them hard to trade.
Couture - 30 - 7 years @ $8M - NTC
Kane - 28 - 5 years @ $7M - NTC
Karlsson - 29 - 7 years @ $11.5M - NMC
Burns - 34 - 5 years @ $8M - NTC
Vlasic - 32 - 6 years @ $7M - NMC
The best return would be for Meier (23), Hertl (26), & Lebanc (24) but those are also the guys you probably don't want to move.

Yeah Wilson has created quite the mess for himself for sure.
On the topic of Laviolette. Lebrun interviewed him post-firing and he noted; "When the time comes, if there is a vacancy down the road, if my family and I feel it's the fit we are looking for, for sure I would want to coach again." Normally I don't think there's much there but when it comes to Americans you always wonder about the family factor when it comes to moving to a different country. It's possible he may not want to coach a Canadian team for family reasons so fans shouldn't be quick to assume that the Flames will be on his radar if there are openings in American cities.

Seriously? No.
Comparatively speaking the Flames are in a much better position than the Sharks to be competitive in the near future. SJ is saddled with huge contracts to aging players and very little in terms of young players and prospect depth. They appear to be on the cusp of a rebuild, whereas the Flames have several high end players just entering their prime playing years, and without the kind of salary cap headache that plagues SJ.
If we are being honest, the Flames boast a much more attractive roster and cap situation than SJ for a coach who is looking to win.

When it comes to Americans you always wonder about the family factor when it comes to moving to a different country. It's possible he may actually want to coach a Canadian team which has a history of employing a lot of US-borne personnel, so fans shouldn't be quick to assume that the Flames will not be on his radar, even if there are openings in American cities.

If Laviolette wants to win a championship within the next 3 years, I think the chances are very low that he would be able to do it with the Flames. If you want to argue that our odds are marginally better than that of San Jose, I can get behind that, but it's a pretty meaningless argument. Calgary showed us what they are made of last post season, and I doubt you get past the first round with that, let alone go on a run.
I guess what I am saying is that if winning is important to Laviolette, then I think he sits tight for a while and waits for a better opportunity to come his way.

I don't think that was overlooked - it's the question people were initially asking, and all the subsequent discussion around his choice assumes they would be willing to do that. A lot of posters assume the owners are too cheap to pay Laviolette. I think that's a tad unfair as a description, but certainly they'd not opened the vault for coaches recently. GG was cheap, no doubt, and Peters was market rate for a coach of his experience.

I have no idea if Laviolette would be interested in a Canadian city, but I am not sure what better opportunity is likely to surface. Teams usually fire coaches because the team sucks. Calgary (and to be fair, Dallas) fired the coach for a different reason and I think joining a relatively young team with a very reasonable shot at the playoffs from the get go is about as good as it gets.

This is the 3rd time Laviolette was fired during the season. The other two times he waited until the off season or the middle of the next season to take a new job. Based on that small sample size, and those comments from Lebrun, I suspect Laviolette won't go anywhere until this summer.
