Icon33 Habs sign Ilya Kovalchuk for the rest of the season ($700k 2 way)

Canadiens Montréal
@CanadiensMTL
The Canadiens have agreed to terms on a one-year, two-way contract with free agent forward Ilya Kovalchuk. The deal will pay Kovalchuk $700,000 at the NHL level and $70,000 in the AHL.

It may be a 2 way deal but I doubt he ever reports to the AHL. He could, if he doesn't already, hold the record for most cancelled contracts after this.

Caps should have taken a flier if this was the price... surprised they didn't based on his relationship with Ovi

This looks pretty reasonable to me. Must not have been a lot of interest in him if this is all it took to sign him.

damn! I'm surprised he agreed to a two-way. Pretty risky.

Not really, if he clears waivers and gets sent down, it likely means he's done in the NHL and won't report.

This also does show that he wanted to play in the NHL for a chance at the cup, and didn’t want to bolt to Russia necessarily as many people were speculating.

Yeah I could see Kovalchuk being really attractive at that salary, especially if he contributes on Montreal's powerplay.

This could be a free third-rounder in the making for Bergevin.

Makes a lot of sense with Gallagher out indefinitely. Why not take a chance with Ilya.

I disagree with those who are surprised at the cap hit.

This was always going to be a league minimum contract. 2-way doesn't matter since Kovalchuk wouldn't report.

That way Kulak can track how long until Kovy bails and he can have his number 17 back....
