Default Team Kazakhstan early favourite for gold at Asian Winter Games

Kazakhstan is looking to reclaim the gold medal in hockey from Japan at the 2007 Asian Winter Games in Changchun, China.

In a field which includes Thailand, the United Arab Emirates, Kuwait, Macao, Malaysia, Hong Kong, Japan, North Korea, South Korea, and China, Kazakhstan has impressed the most thus far.

In a 38-0 win versus the UAE, shots were 103-2 in favour of Team Borat. The Kazakh goalie OGURESHNIKOV was replaced for his insolence after the first two shots, and his replacement GUBAREV kept all zero shots out of the net in relief.

UAE coach Yury Faikou liked Kazakhstan's odds to reclaim gold from Japan: "The Kazaks have to take the first place, have to," said Faikou. "I watched the game between Japan and DPR Korea. I would say Japan is not a team for the first place. Kazaks are so much better."

[Game summary here: http://result.changchun2007.org/data...l/IH101105.HTM]

Also looking impressive however is China who faced no shots from the upstart Macaoese. 543 of China's 1.3 billion people came out to support the home team.

Coaches from Canada, the US, and the Czech Republic bemoan the lack of talent on their respective Hong Kong, Thai, and Kuwait teams: http://www.iht.com/articles/ap/2007/...mes-Hockey.php

It's nice to see that some of these countries actually have a slight interest in hockey but some of the stuff just made me laugh.

"The players don't know how to skate on hard ice, which requires more bending at the knee to make cuts,"

I dunno why, but that amuses me.

Thanks for the link!

In advance of the expected and entirely predictable smart ass remarks forthcoming, I think its pretty cool that, however meager, those countries have enough interest to send teams to a regional tournament.

I figured a city like Hong Kong would have at least one decent ice rink somewhere.

The winner of this tournament should play the Peewee Esso Minor Hockey Week Division 3 Champions. That my friends, is what we call a showdown!

In all seriousness though, its nice to see the game expanding. Team Borat rulz!

In all honesty Kazhakstan did field a couple of descent 2nd tier teams in the past. On the level w/ swiss etc. This was despite the fact they could not afford enough sticks and had to share them between shifts. Still 38-0 is ridonculous. They got mad at the Canadian women for running up the score when they were winning games 10-0.

Didn't the Kazahkstan juniors actually beat the Canadian juniors in a game a few years ago?

The Kazahks are a little out of place in that tournament for sure. They would be better off competing with teams like Switzerland, Germany, and 2nd tier hockey countries like Ukraine, Italy, Britain, and Slovenia.

yeah kazakhstan would definately give any of those teams a run for their money (if not in fact totally dominate them). Internationally, Kazakhstan was part of the USSR until 1994. So they actually have quite a few people in their organization who were part of the old soviet teams.

they finished in 8th place in the 1998 olympics, and 9th in the 2006. Not too shabby considering. Also Nabokov and Antropov are two notable stars from Kazakhstan.

I guess I'm getting a little off topic here though... insert borat joke here

I think there are 3, two are in malls. Many Canadian ex-pats get together and play on occassion. It's a great way to get out of the heat

The anthem at the end of the game was inspiring.

Kazakhstan greatest country in the world.
All other countries are run by little girls.
Kazakhstan number one exporter of potassium.
Other countries have inferior potassium.

Kazakhstan home of Tinshein swimming pool.
It’s length thirty meter and width six meter.
Filtration system a marvel to behold.
It remove 80 percent of human solid waste.

Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan you very nice place.
From Plains of Tarashek to Northern fence of Jewtown.
Kazakhstan friend of all except Uzbekistan.
They very nosey people with bone in their brain.

Kazakhstan industry best in world.
We invented toffee and trouser belt.
Kazakhstan’s prostitutes cleanest in the region.
Except of course for Turkmenistan’s.

Kazakhstan, Kazakhstan you very nice place.
From Plains of Tarashek to Norther fence of Jewtown.

Come grasp the mighty penis of our leader.
From junction with the testes to tip of its face!
