As for the TSN/SN discussion, I guess Im a bit of an anomaly as i really dont care who calls games, where I watch it on the dial, or anything else as long as i get to watch the game as that is what i tune in for.

I have no doubt if Sportsnet walked away that TSN would swoop in and do a fine job.

I'd be concerned that the announce team would stay behind but at least no more Francis.

Curious if this would include radio as previously mentioned. Could be a huge blow to Fan 960

That’s not how divorces work. That’d be like you and your wife divorce and she gets the neighbour’s motorhome.

Rogers continues to lose money on this TV deal and looks to cut loose their least valuable assets. I would be fine with TSN picking up the TV coverage maybe we would get Cuthbert doing play by play for all of our games?

TSN streaming is a few bucks cheaper then SN, so all for it!.

As long as TSN picks it up that is.

Great news for fans but probably not so great for the Flames seeing TSN will be their only option and they are not guaranteed the returns they received from Rogers. That said does walking away mean they aren't even going to entertain covering the Flames or simply at cost their current deal? If they are walking away completely then the Flames only have one place to go and I imagine TSN will be receptive but they are a more prudent operation and will pay what they deem market and not above. That said the Flames are a bigger market than Winnipeg so I have to imagine they will have considerable interest. No idea who the next PBP crew would be but at the very least the intermissions would be a considerable upgrade.

I dont think PPV is even an option.. considering the dome is basically half empty most nights and there are many legal/non-legal options. Just doesn't seem like it would make them much money.

There's little doubt that McDavid is a factor here but even if he wasn't an Oiler and they were the last place team in the league they would opt for the Oilers over the Flames as the Oilers bring in higher viewership numbers. There are more hardcore fans in Edmonton and their fan support is more broad in Alberta and Sask.

and how the hell did 2&7 get Scotty Bowman for a year??!
I was about 8 years old when Whalen stopped calling games so my memory is a bit hazy, although I could have sworn Pollock did colour at some point. I never realized Bowman called Flames games, that’s pretty cool!

In those days less than half the regular season was televised locally so TV color was more of a part time gig compared to radio.

I would think it’s cheaper to run the Oilers broadcast too. The fanboys Quinn, Principe, and Remenda probably don’t demand high salaries as there’s no chance for them to get poached by other broadcasts. I feel like the Flames broadcast paid a little more to entice Ball and Hrudey after years of subpar on-air talent.

Not sure what you are talking about but the Flames average 18,500 a game. Half empty is some serious hyperbole.

I continually read that Rogers Sportsnet is losing money yet I can not find anywhere that they are in fact losing money. From their last full year financials (2018) released in January 2019 it looks like Rogers made over $400 M in profit. A lot of that is attributed to wireless, which is to be expected, but they state an increase in cable revenue.

The biggest cash drain appears to be the large contracts given to "personalities" handed out by the former President, sometimes to the tune of 60% over market value. When he was called in to the board and told to reduce these contracts by up to 20% to reflect market value he decided to quit and walk away with the comment "I am a builder not someone who tears things down". They just weren't making what they expected.

I would like to take this time to mention that according to Canadian Law there is nothing illegal about watching the streams on reddit

That's fantastic that you took me so literal. It's not like teams have ever exaggerated their numbers on attendance, right?

Have you been to a weekday game recently? Use your eyes and look around next time. Or go over to the ticket exchange forum on CP and see how cheap the tickets are being sold.

Personally, I'd be ok never having to watch Sportsnet or subscribe to another one of their services ever again. The only reason I ever watch that network is if they're showing a flames game. I think it'd be a good thing for Flames fans if the rights are picked up by someone else.

A good number of games would still be on Sportsnet through their national rights deal, so you would need both to watch every game.

For example, this season the Jets have 60 games on TSN, 12 on HNIC, and 10 on Sportsnet.

Also, every playoff game would be on Sportsnet/CBC too.

Maybe Rick Ball would go work for TSN and still do Flames games.

Can do without Cassie thank you.
