One thing I will say in Bennett's defence: He played the most minutes against McDavid of any Flames forward (6:16 TOI), and held him to 0 scoring chances and a 25% expected goals. That's a damn solid game from your 4th line center.
I noticed a few times on the broadcast that Bennett was facing off against McDavid. Also after the whistle, when they showed McDavid, there was Bennett in his back pocket, even after the whistle. I loved it.

They are friends and played minor hockey together as kids.
I think that's a good thing for the match-up. playing against a guy you grew up with only adds to the incentive to shut him down.

Perhaps the Oilers are not as strong as Edmonton thought...
What a sweet win, even if I was relegated to listening to it on the radio. There's no better way to rebound from being shut out than pounding your archrivals in their own rink.

That’s a really interesting development. Could it be that Ward thinks Bennett’s skill set is best suited as a shutdown centre? Makes sense, he can skate, he’s physical, he can take care of himself physically, and I think that if he develops some confidence in his role, he may even chip in some points.
He might not have the highest IQ to read plays in the open but he can just stick himself to the oppositions best player and make them uncomfortable.
If Bennett becomes a physical shutdown centre who can chip in 15 goals and 30 points, that is a very valuable asset.
I’m curious to see if this continues against Petterssen tommorow.

If they were facing off, as was suggested, that’s Tippet’s choice that McDavid was facing Bennett.

There's no easy fix, its going to hurt and stretch out the pain for a half decade depending on Hollands competency. The Oilers have shot themselves not only in the foot, but both feet, their left hand, their genitalia and probably their face due to stupidity, arrogance and incompetence.
And they never had a right hand to begin with. As for their genitalia, there are lots of jokes to be made regarding the team name, but I'm not going there.

I'd trade Draisaitl. Dude floats out there like no one I've seen... I was watching him on the ice yesterday and when he's going to the bench, his last stride is about 10 metres out.

For all of the Oiler talk of his elite offensive instincts, his passing is outright dangerous to his own team. He drops the puck in the worst spot or tries to force the puck across multiple defenders, he's good with his release, and good at finding open areas of the ice, he's average at everything else.
He's what they were hoping that Yak would develop into.

Good luck against the Blues.

Breadman has 5 points in his last five games. Didn't he have a close call in minny for a goal too (missed the game)?
Looks like he is picking up steam here. Been clamoring for us to develop another top six player in the organization. Dont know if this will prove to be a hot streak or if he can produce at a more elevated clip in an elevated role. One can hope!
I think ward is completely comfortable with any of the lines playing against top lines. He didn't shy away from the match up at all.
That’s the thing about the new lines, they are all responsible, or at least have a good defensive player on each line. Backlund, Lindholm, Ryan (really the whole 3rd line), Reider/Frolik (and Bennett isn’t bad defensively, and the guys sitting are also decent defensively).
Plus your D pairings are all defensively capable now.
I've said this going back to the Gulutzan days, but Bennett as a C was never a liability defensively. He really struggled to produce offence when playing C, but he was very solid down low in his own zone, and he's always been elite at winning puck battles.

Ward seems to see a bigger picture and is more flexible versed on player usage. Having Johnny play on other lines makes it hard for teams to zero in with a game plan to neutralize him. It also helps to reduce the giveaways since he doesn't have to do it all himself. His usage of Bennett as a shutdown C takes advantage of his unique skill set. If Bennett can get comfortable in his role we may start to see a much more consistent player. Finally we can start to see Bennett as part of the team and not have someone polarizing him by constantly bumping his threads with some useless debate! Taking Johnny and Monahan off the top lines also helps mold the team and give other skilled guys a chance to grow, demonstrate skills, leadership.
I think once the playoff roll around we will see vintage Johnny and teams will have a lot more of the Flames to worry about.
Impressed with Tobias Rieder speed, excellent weapon to wear down defenses over the coarse of the game. Really liking Ward's version of the Flames. From what I have read he seems more of a players coach and gets the team more involved in the decision making process. His management style screams more about empowerment and giving the players the tools to succeed as apposed to a top down approach. Top down = players doing it because they are told, empowerment = players doing it because they are part of the solution and want to do it.
Now if we can just get a more consistent effort 1st in the West can be had.
