I thought the biggest FU to TLJ and Rian was the Jedi/Sith lore and powers. It felt like they mentioned those words 100x. Plus Rey used the books, they had Wayfinders, Sith home planet, those weird followers that Sidious somehow conjured. Maybe they were the original inhabitants of that planet. Not sure where he got the material for the Star Destroyers either. Aw who cares it was fantastic.

Did anyone else find the movie visually a little too dark? Or did I just have a poor screening. I felt a lot of scenes could have done with a tad more brightness. Particularly everything on Exegol. I understand the ambiance of that place is supposed to be dark, but I felt just a little more brightness would have allowed you to see what looked like a really amazing setting better without killing the mood.

Not sure if the movie was actually good or TLJ was so bad it made this seem really good
I can’t believe any reviewer could give TLJ a higher rating.

Couple of changes
- Instead of healing the Rancor she should have talked it into moving with the Force. If the Force surrounds all things then Rey should have been able to Jedi Mind trick the Rancor too - would have been cool since we've never seen it used like that before
- During the Rey / Kylo fight I don't think Rey needs to stab him and heal him. They can probably just have Kylo and Rey both collapse and stop fighting when they feel Leia's force disturbance
Then when it's used at the end of the movie it feels like it was something they only realized could be done now that Palpatine had introduced it and healed himself.
Opposed to something that all the other Jedi's had just decided wasn't important to use prior to this movie.
Agree that they still should have had a couple that failed to pull up and should have crashed into ground.
|
The healing of the Rancor was for the important information "I gave a bit of my lifeforce to heal" (Or whatever she said) It forshadows that you can't just go around bringing people back to life. The Healing takes the lifeforce of the person. This makes the end scene make sense.
Without healing Kylo how would he have known it was possible to heal? Would have been a WAY bigger stretch and cringe worthy if he magically just did it out of nowhere. The emperor sucking their life to heal himself isn't quiet the same/tip off that Jedi's can heal people.
It was overdone in a way, but I think it's better then the jumps that 'Oh I could heal and bring someone back all along, but also die"

So funny that so many were prepared to hate it because of the leaks but ended up liking it when it was all said and done. Things translate better on screen than on paper I guess.
Goes to show that 'wait and see' is always a sound approach to take. And maybe not spoiling it for yourself ahead of time? I dont really understand why you would if you're a fan. But to each their own I suppose.

I’m glad I spoiled it. It gave me time to digest the stupidity of some of the story and departure from TLJ. JJ pulled it off quite miraculously though.

I really enjoyed it. I didn't dislike TLJ as much as some folks, and thought it brought something a bit unique to the series despite some shoddy execution at times (for example, I thought jaded old Luke was actually a fairly logical and easy-to-intuit direction to take with his character at this stage), but I certainly walked out of the theatre a bit more "satisfied" right off the bat this time. There were some shots at Johnson with this movie (I'd add Luke's "that's not how a Jedi should treat their weapon" comment to the examples already listed in this thread), but like SuperMatt, also think it dovetails a bit better with 8 than people are suggesting. I am looking forward to going back and watching the three sequel trilogy films together again.
There were some really poignant moments in this movie that managed to get the blood flowing pretty effectively. Ben's moment with Han atop the wreckage was fantastic, as was the lightsaber battle. Ian McDiarmid is the on-screen version of John Williams for this series, and continues to seemingly be the do-no-wrong elder statesman of the franchise- he rocked it as Palpatine yet again, and I really dug the sinister mood a lot of the movie had as a result of his character/the environments.

The ending with that iconic music with Rey on Tatooine. For a second I thought they might not play it and I was going to leave angry and then it came booming in and I almost teared up a little.

I loved it. Had a smile on my face the entire time and got a little misty when Chewy cried for Leia. I really don't care that a lot of it was fan service. I've been watching these movies for nearly 40 years (ROTJ was the first movie I saw in theatre) and I was ready to be served.
When Chewy got his medal my 11 year old laughed and muttered "finally". My 10 year old giggled at the Ewoks (though he whispered that the Emperor was freaking him out).
I'm going again on Monday and can't wait.

Not sure why they even added the Knights of Ren. Kind of useless and no backstory or explanation of what exactly they were.
So Snoke was just a Sith cloning/ test tube baby experiment?

Agreed on KoR. I blame Rian.
It appeared so based on Palpatine’s comments and the bodies in the jars.
On another note, Richard E Grant should have played the Hux role from the start. Gleeson was miscast and his acting cringeworthy in all 3 instalments. Would have loved to see Grant in the role and have an actual character arc as Hux to better explain his turn. Again, I blame Rian.
Oh man Keri Russell was Poe’s friend. I kept thinking she sounded familiar just couldn’t tell from the brief shot of her eyes.
Just learned that Warwick Davis was the Ewok and John Williams was the bartender. Cool!

If I were to describe the movie in a word: frantic.
No time to let anything sink in, no time to dwell on anything, just jumping around as quick as possible and move onto the next one, it was like watching a speedrun of a movie trilogy. Basically what happens when you need to put two and half movies worth of plot into one because you had no plan for the trilogy to build around. Also felt the most like a Marvel movie of any Star Wars films I've seen, and I'm including the prequels in that. Maybe because the Force has now more than ever fallen into 'it's as strong or weak is the plot needs it to be' similar to superhero powers across various comics. But I think it's the pacing. My favorite part of the trilogy is probably the first Rey scenes. Brought us back to a Star Wars feel, but managed to say so much without really having any dialogue. While TFA was a re-hash, it hit the marks needed that made Star Wars enjoyable. TLJ took that and threw it out the window for some reason ('a hard reboot following a soft reboot'), and this one just threw as much into the story as possible hoping it could make up for it.
I don't really care that Palpatine was brought back, dumb that it's kind of out of nowhere and two movies worth of a red herring again point to the problems of not having a choerent idea of who your villain is and what that story-line will look like, you needed a Big Bad to defeat, so your options of who could be a big enough bad guy to cap off the sage are pretty limited. But the visual of him with that contraption moving him around just reminded me of GLaDOS which is now the crossover I wish existed, because GLaDOS already has the shade to throw at Rey: Well done. Here are the test results: You are a horrible person. I'm serious, that's what it says: "A horrible person." We weren't even testing for that. Don't let that horrible-person thing discourage you. It's just a data point. If it makes you feel any better, science has now validated your birth mother's decision to abandon you on a doorstep.
Heart wasn't in this one so I don't really have as much else to say. It was fine if the Marvel movie style is what you like, but while I enjoyed it more than TLJ, I'm not going to be rushing to watch it again, either. I think it was a perfectly adequate way to wrap up the story considering what VIII left, so take that for what it's worth.

Might have been a poor screening TBH.
I’m usually pretty sensitive to that and didn’t find it too dark.

Freddie Prinze Jr was in a Star Wars movie. Never thought that would happen.
It's cool that Warwick Davis came back for Wicket too.

I’m not following this one. How is them mentioning the Jedi lore, talking about the history of Jedi/Sith, and Rey using the books at all an FU to TLJ.
Jedi lore, talking about the force and how it works, and Rey stealing the books from the Jedi temple were all key plot points from her arc in TLJ. I feel like it one was of the things that was a direct set up from TLJ “The girl already possesses everything she needs”.
Also in the thread before the movie came out I had predicted that since 8 was a lot about the history of the Jedi and stealing the Jedi texts, that 9 would be a lot about the Sith and the history of the Sith. And that turned out true at least partially true with wayfinders, going back to the origin planet of the Sith, and finding “The Last Sith” in Palpatine.
So if anything this continues the story from TLJ, don’t see that as an FU at all.

Some just from TLJ and the way Rian treated the whole Seth/Jedi lore and also thought I read he thought all the archaic religion stuff was lame and wanted to modernize the idea of Jedi/Sith and move away from a lot of the lore. Could be wrong, maybe he didn’t say that and it was people speculating.
As for the books, I certainly didn’t expect they’d be used at all in this movie let alone to help Rey find something like a wayfinder.

The frantic nature of the film was also magnified for me, as they had to restart the movie 15 minutes in after a patron started screaming at someone else about their cell phone. He started yelling "Turn your f-ing cell phone off!! I've waited a year to see this movie!!!" over and over. The ushers showed up to remove him. They had to turn on the lights and pause the movie. They then restarted the movie.
After getting over my initial extreme annoyance, I felt very bad for the guy. He either had some kind of medical issue or was under extreme stress. This was not a normal reaction to a cell phone in a theater.
