He doesn't get to just walk away. This is mutual termination. If the Kings wanted to they could have suspended him until his contract was up.
Also the rules about 35+ contracts are pretty clear. The Kings knew that cap hit was staying with them regardless if he retired, kidnapped by aliens, etc.

It has to with how I feel about it.

Kovalchuk has more points than every guy in our bottom six except Derek Ryan (and he’s played less games than many of them). For league minimum (or close to it)? I say go for it.

Does he still have good skating?
Guy is still a 0.5 point per game player, right shooting winger with a lethal shot. And now he can be added without giving up any assets.
If he's just a pouting Russian version of Neal though, then no thanks.
|
At league minimum it really takes away the risk if he is a russian name Neal. Worth a shot IMO. Worst that happens is we lose 750k in cap space. Oh noes.

Is about context.
He cheats even strength and shoots hard on the pp. he can still score but it comes at a cost in other areas.
I don’t see the fit personally.

Probably doesn't matter anyways.
If the Bruins are interested I don't see him picking anyone else, unless the Caps take an interest as well. These are the top teams in the league right now and would likely be very appealing.

Thanks that makes more sense. I guess they really are just leaning into the rebuild.
Virtually any of the examples you could imagine are fine and understandable with the +35 risk, but choosing to walk to another team is the one thing I would take huge issue with.

The Capitals seem like a perfect fit with their love of Russians.

Old, slow, one dimensional, PP specialist, league min contract, from a dark desolate region. Sounds like a perfect Oiler.

Oh wow, that's hilariously slow on my part. I was looking for an embedded tweet but I didn't see one.

Andreychuk's numbers are not impressive for someone who played their entire prime in the highest scoring era of the NHL. His adjusted numbers are even worse, he has no personal accolades, and his voting record is equally mediocre. Truly an embarrassing HHOF induction.
Kovalchuk by comparison has a 6-7 year run as one of the best wingers in the game and his paper credentials prove that.
And both Fleury and Kovalchuk will eventually get into the HHOF once a generation has passed and everyone forgets about their off-ice drama.

It's Kovalchuk's own fault for leaving to Russia that he probably won't see the hall but I doubt he gives a crap because he's gotta be a top five all time earner after the tax free mega millions he made playing over there.

For league minimum or close to? Why not. Could help our powerplay. Still has a good shot.

I don't see any reason nor desire on Kovalchuk's part to sign in Calgary when those other two teams are among the interested parties. Seems like a long shot.

Not sure where this narrative started but Ilya Kovalchuk has 9 points this year and only 1 of them is on the PP.
