Does this mean those rumors about Grigorenko being older than advertised were also true?

You'd think but basically demanding to go to a contender always bugs me.

I'm unconvinced. It's easy to say "it's known in Russia" with nothing to back it up.

Kovalchuk was considered to be a top prospect long before the draft. Ovechkin was drafted by the Panthers because of leap years. Bure was drafted by the Wings but they couldn't prove he played enough games. If there was even a hint that this top, franchise altering prospect was eligible for the draft in 1999 and 2000, something would have spilled.

I don’t know how you can point to a single example as being conclusively true based on that tweet

But I totally believe the dirty cheating Russians have at least tried this one out. Their cheating playbook has more complex and proven scams than this one

Agreed.

Consider the World under 20 tournament (and under 18 tournament). Two years, at 18 and 19, is HUGE. There is no way that Russia could systematically get away with lying about players' ages. And once they went through the WJCs, they would be known commodities and it would be impossible to simply change their ages afterwards.

So no, not buying it at all.

I'd take Kovalchuk on the Flames at league min for the rest of the year. Good gamble to take.

I don’t understand this. He just gets to walk away from his contract, handcuffing a team with a cap penalty, and sign somewhere else?!

Yup. Should know by now Kovalchuk pushes the contract law envelope.

On top of that, the Devils are still stuck with a cap hit for Kovalchuk until the end of the 2022/23 season. The CBA is pretty much written to prevent Kovalchuk's shenanigans.

I hope he signs with the oilers and assists in ripping that room apart.

David Pagnotta @TheFourthPeriod
Told BOS, CGY, PIT among teams w/ interest. Kovalchuk hopes to sign this week & get back on ice ASAP, but of course no guarantees.

Note: Kovalchuk can sign during the holiday roster freeze (applies to waivers/trades/loans), but a team must have open roster spot during freeze.

Couldn't happen to a nicer team. Makes up for the get of jail free card they had with Richards.

Irrelevant. Could have happened to any team. I don’t see how this should be acceptable.

You forget that he played for the Leafs and scored 53 goals for them in one of those shooter tutor seasons. +1 million HHOF points.

It could happen to any team, but it is good that it happens to them. But I suppose it's a danger that can be avoided if you don't hand out stupidly large contracts to guys who (a) are old and way below what they were; (b) have a history of quitting on their team (see NJ in 2013); and (c) has a history of pushing contractual boundaries.

I haven't watch Kovalchuk at all.

Does he still have good skating?

Guy is still a 0.5 point per game player, right shooting winger with a lethal shot. And now he can be added without giving up any assets.

If he's just a pouting Russian version of Neal though, then no thanks.

Again, none of that has anything to do with allowing a player to void an NHL contract because he feels like it (especially with huge cap implications) and signing with another team.
