If you were due a large bonus at your work would you walk away before or after it was paid?

I care about my legacy, I care about 2.5 million more though.

How much less do you think he could care?

Surprised Melnyk didn’t want that sweet sweet free cap penalty

Is it too late for him to be busted for something illegal, giving the Kings a get out of jail free card from the contract and avoid the cap hit?

This literally happens all the time in the Silicon Valley software world... no one else will look after you, so I don't fault him at all.

This was a flat out idiotic signing from day 1. Is anyone really shocked at how this played out?!

I would 100% do the same thing. I don't think this has any effect on his 'legend in the NHL'... like under his hall of fame entry are they going to say "An amazing scorer in his day, HOWEVER he did make a fiscally responsible move and maximized his earnings before he left the LA Kings."

HOF may not happen. He's shy of the 500/1000 numbers to be a lock. Won one award (the Richard in a year when 41 goals was good enough). I suppose he can thank Heatly for not winning another one (the Calder). The 5 year absence might do him in.

I was at a season ticket holder event last year watching the black aces practice with my boy. I tried to explain to him that the 2 guys yucking it up, chucking the puck with their hands and having a good laugh were paid 8 figures combined.

Much like the Kings, he didn’t get it.

I highly doubt he gets into the HOF... just used it for comedic purposes.

It's almost as if the Kings won the Cup and then handed the reigns over to Magic Johnson and Jeannie Buss - boy the Kings are a mess right now

The joke is saying that he won't get into the HHOF. His accolades:

AS Voting Record: 1, 2, 3, 3, 3, 5, 6
Rocket Richard Record: 1, 2, 3, 4, 6, 6, 7, 8
Art Ross Record: 2, 5, 6, 8, 10
Has a good Stanley Cup run with NJ

Kovalchuk was damn good in his prime and in a HHOF where players like Dave Andreychuk make it, Kovy will get voted in eventually.

In the game or two that I've seen, he still has the skill and speed to be an effective offensive player. Put him on a good team where he's motivated and you'll see the difference. The Oilers could use him

Kovalchuk to Colorado makes a ton of sense, especially with their persistent injury troubles. They also have tons of cap space.

I could also see him winding up in Tampa Bay or Nashville. Maybe Boston if they can make the cap work.

One more to watch: the Islanders. Another team with a ton of space that's been reported to be on the lookout for a scorer. Lou is there, too, and has plenty of history with Kovalchuk.

NYI or Colorado are the best bets imo.

He should sign in Winnipeg so he can extend his franchise scoring lead.
