Out of 121 seats, that's FIVE for sure visible minorities, and one maybe. 96% of that party is white.
Kinda tough to paint the other guy as a racist when your own caucus is 96% T-cell.

There does not need to be a certain “percentage” to be considered not racist. Stop looking at the colour of people’s skin and counting them as numbers. Treat them the same as every other Canadian.

This is why I get so tired of the deferral to PoC, LGBTQ, etc., lived experiences being called "identity politics." You're not being a "reasoned centrist" when you do this, you're being a gaslighting ahole.

I know this is a Canadian forum and all, but sheesh could you take the Trudeau-stuff to offtopic already? It's just a Canadian politics discussion disguised as something else, and as someone who really doesn't care one way or the other about Trudeau it's tiresome and irrelevant.

Sorry, this is now Trudeau blackface thread version 12. You may be able to find some discussion of Aliu and, more generally, racism in hockey and how to make hockey and society more inclusive in one of the "Jankowski sucks" threads.

Given that a severity scale for murder exists, how could we logically justify not having a scale for blackface?

Who had thought that the best thing Trudeau did for minorities was be racist to them?
Up until 2019, every year on this board we had the old-white-conservatives come out and talk about how blackface costumes weren't bad and how sensitive everyone was.
But ever since they found out Trudeau did it, they've had to make sure to point out how racist it is. Now everyone agrees that blackface is offensive. It's great, first year on this board we didn't have a major blackface conversation at Halloween.
There's a huge contrast from today than in 2012 with Bozak (or pick your year and 'incident').

And just so I don't intend to call anyone out, here's my view from 2013 that has also significantly changed:

If a 12 year old kid wanted to dress up as his favourite hockey player who he idolizes, no big deal right? Well if that child is white and the player in question is Iginla, it somehow magically becomes offensive? Disagree heavily. Again I understand the reason it could be perceived as offensive but it shouldn't be. And I'd argue that it's not even a case of "reverse racism" but plain and simple racism on the part of those who do see it as offensive. By suggesting that this child shouldn't dress up as his idol because of their respective skin colours the message they are sending is that a white child couldn't actually truly idolize a black person and therefore dressing up as one is a mockery rather than flattery. They are overlooking the very simple fact that the child actually could idolize someone regardless of race therefore making themselves the racists.
|
With that said, even in the position of immature me at 2013, it was clear what this guy did in 2011 was aimed to be offensive.

That is 100% even worse than I thought it would be.
I really hope that he was treated better by Troy Ward and his staff in Abbotsford, and i'm happy that he did at least get his NHL moment during his time with the Flames.
Because really the game of hockey has been really ####ty to Aliu otherwise.

For me, seeing that picture, feels like a kick to the gut. I *cannot* imagine how Aliu must have felt, trapped there and thinking he needed to put up with it to spare feelings. Feel so bad for him.

Colorado Eagles trainer Tony Deynzer has been placed on an administrative leave of absence by the Colorado Avalanche.
The news comes after Akim Aliu spoke with the Wall Street Journal about how Deynzer dressed in blackface back in 2011 at a Halloween Party. #Avs

I think you might be surprised to learn how 'every other Canadian' who isn't white experiences Canada. Just because we're less racist than most places doesn't mean it isn't a thing or that it isn't a problem.
Having 96% of your party made up of rich white folks is a problem. It doesn't mean they're racists. But a group that's 96% rich white folks is going to prioritize their interests. And their interests are going to be pretty similar.

I do have to say that my view on this has changed too. I once thought something similar to you as well, in that if you're wearing it for "accuracy" it's maybe okay.
But I think that message is wrong now too.
Even just doing what you stated in your example is calling out to that young child that "Iggy is different than you". Which is the exact mentality that we need to move away from as a culture.
If you want to dress up as Iggy, Aladdin, Michael Jackson, etc then there is no reason you can't wear the costume without the blackface.
The better message that we need to be sending is that we are all equal regardless of the colour of our skin. So if that kid wants to go out in his hockey gear, and Iggy jersey and go as Iggy for halloween then that's all he needs, no need to paint his face to "be like his idol".

I'd like to think it's a mixture of talent and hard work. But I also have to thank the racist-old-white-conservatives too. Without them, none of this would be possible.

Yeah he's an idiot. Deserves to be punished.
But what about every other player and coach from that team who witnessed this? Some of whom apparently knew in advance?
I'd personally feel a lot better about the world if I knew at least somebody stood up for the guy.

Doesn't matter if it is so much worse somewhere else. It needs to stop happening everywhere. We have it in hockey and that is bad enough. It simply just needs to stop. Completely.
