Last night, at the Board of Governors meeting, we asked if there were any investigations underway for abuse/racial comments that we were not aware of. The answer was no. Whatever happened with Jim Montgomery in Dallas, it does not fall under that umbrella.
I think we can safely assume that if someone is dismissed it is for verifiable and substantial reasons.
Let's please not diminish this in the process of trying to clean up the culture around the game.

Some off-duty conduct perhaps? Something criminal? Only other thing I can thing of is some sort of theft from his employer?

Well that is what you would expect them to say.
The timing is suspicious as hell. Bettman comes out and says teams that hide issues will be disciplined, and not even 24 hours later a coach gets fired.

“ Oh you asked about ongoing investigations, we were finished ours”

Sounds like something outside the locker room. I'm thinking it's in the range of gambling, sexual harassment, etc that they could terminate him with cause.
It's not that clear to me - I read it as a little more carefully worded and saying this firing did not fall under the "umbrella" of the new procedures. Just like Peters didn't. But that doesn't exclude that kind of conduct, it just means that it wasn't treated under the process. At the same time, maybe it's totally unrelated conduct - some sort of criminal behavior, gambling stuff like Tocchet, etc.

Source says Montgomery’s “unprofessional conduct” took place while employed by the Stars. Montgomery was hired by Dallas in May, 2018.

Well that seems likely. He is being fired, unlike Peters.

Yeah, if he is being fired for cause, then I suspect it is unrelated to his coaching conduct, which seems to be a much more difficult to support from a legal standing.

... which, I suppose, is not actually clear at this point.
