#Flames have added Ray Edwards as an assistant coach, effective immediately. He’s been with the team in a player development role since 2015-16.
Edwards will be on the ice at practice today.

Player development coach... this seems straight out of left field?
Phoenix Coyotes Assistant General Manager and General Manager of the San Antonio Rampage Brad Treliving announced today that the Coyotes have officially named Ray Edwards as head coach of the Rampage, the Coyotes’ American Hockey League (AHL) affiliate.

Good move here in not bringing in a previous head coach in as an assistant. Gives Ward a bit of a 'vote of confidence', and doesn't have to look over his shoulder too much in a way. This is firmly Ward's show now, and I hope he can really put his stamp firmly on this team, and see how the season unfolds. So far, so good, and I hope he continues making this team his own.

8 years in the AHL with the same organization as an assistant and then head coach is a very long tenure and says alot about how Treliving and Maloney felt about his ability to develop young players. A positive is in a player development role since , he will be familiar with a large chunk of the club as this is his 5th season with the Flames.

Feels like this might be a temporary assignment. Will probably go back to just Player Development if/when the Flames find someone else.
Mid-season coaching hires are sometimes difficult as teams don't always grant permission to talk to staff under contract. Might be easier in the offseason.

New assistant coach Ray Edwards says he will remain as the team’s Director of Player Development.
Sounds like Edwards will be the team’s new “eye in the sky” coach upstairs during games. Martin Gelinas will remain on the bench. #Flames

Heard Gelinas on the Fan after the game last night and when asked about going back down behind the bench, I sensed that he'd prefer to be up as the team's eye in the sky, but wasn't against stepping up to help the team during this time. Completely my own interpretation.

THIS.
And why bring up someone from Stockton when things are going well for the Heat.
Listening to his interview, sounds like Ray is well liked amongst the players, has a great attitude, and is familiar with most of the guys. I think this is a great move. Gives the locker room some more positivity after so much negativity the past two weeks.
