A company that relies utterly on public opinion to sell tickets merch', persuade the city and province for help, yes they should and do care about what the public think, in fact public opinion is the single most important aspect of this for the Flames

I think the guy who treated a guy bad because of the colour of his skin and the choice of his music while using racial slurs destroyed his life. The media is just reporting it.

Geoff Ward will be the 12th Flames head coach in the last 19 years, which is pretty astounding

At the very least, CP would be exceptional for jury duty.

Unlike the Wideman incident, the Flames have the chance here to do something really positive for hockey and for sport in general. They have already proven to be a forward-looking organization with McGratton's role and how they have handled player's personal health issues of late (think of Stajan a few years ago, Brodie this year).

I'm hoping the Flames will see this as the opportunity to initiate a real culture change in the hockey and not try to bury this or "put it behind us and move forward" as they say in modern sports talk.

Go Flames Go - Go and do the right thing.
One reason I've been proud to be a Flames fan is because I genuinely feel it's an organization that makes an effort to do the right things. Whether it's helping players with substance abuse like you mentioned, or prioritizing player health, being respectful towards departing players, charity work or just showing up at a Pride-parade, I've never felt they're just going through the motions for publicity. Sure it's ALSO publicity, but I've grown to trust that they do care, and they do try. In general they even handle things with class.

It would not surprise me if they're behind the pack in this stuff right now. The Flames identity has long been kind of hard-nosed, a place where you practice hard and work hard, and that sort of stuff can easily attract certain types of a-holes who think players just need to just be pushed harder and harder if they're not performing.

However, I don't see them as the kind of organization that buries problems, and I fully trust that they're not going to do that here.

One reason I trust they'll handle this right is the way players speak about Treliving. They sound to me like they have a lot of respect for him, and that kind of respect usually goes both ways.

Yes, and not necessarily. Also, IMO, unlikely simply because of optics.

The "court of public opinion" is not how reasonable, professionally-managed employers make decisions on employees' termination or reinstatement. They make a reasoned judgement based on fact, supportable evidence and their own willingness to pay termination amounts depending on their view of their situation.

There is nothing wrong with an employer terminating any employee, regardless of whether said employee has a contract or not, and regardless of length of service. The question isn't even (mostly) one of "cause". Where supportable cause does not exist, the employer can terminate, pay statutory minimum severance (look it up under Alberta Employment Standards for instance, though each jurisdiction is different) and then decide whether additional compensation is required for the lack of notice. THAT is what gives rise to wrongful dismissal suits. It's not usually the termination per se - it is the lack of proper notice, opportunity for remediation etc. This applies to more or less all employers and employees, regardless of position. Mail clerks to presidents. Plumbers to architects. And yes, even in the case of "cause" (very difficult to establish!).

This situation is no different.

And a side note for anyone in a difficult position:
Notice may be part of a contractual arrangement, or it may be informal. But regardless of Employment Standards saying, for instance, one month notice...there are situations where that is simply inadequate. Again, THAT is what gives rise to lawsuit, negotiation and payment to the aggrieved employee.

Anyone who works for an employer should familiarize themselves with the rules. They are abused often (restaurants and bars are notorious) and, if you find yourself in such a situation, make a complaint to Alberta Employment Standards. They're pretty OK, if slow. Or contact a competent employment lawyer. Calgary has quite a few.

News Update

TSN reporting that Peters left Buffalo earlier today.

Hold up on officially firing him is the legal side and the unprecedented situation of firing a coach for off ice conduct with another organization.

Akim Aliu is scheduled to meet with the NHL in the next couple of days to tell them his side of the story

Bill Peters left Buffalo earlier today, so he won’t be traveling home with the team.

I wish I knew this Peters stuff earlier. Seeing him take that puck to the face last year would have been thoroughly enjoyable.

Dropping the N bomb to a 20 year old player? He deserves everything he is getting and more

I honestly thought these players hated coaches like Babcock because they made them bag skate and took away their ice time. Turns out these guys are full blown abusive psychos

You're likely quite correct about this to some degree. The ultimate disposition of it, true. I was more commenting on the speed of the decision. The Flames haven't moved at a snails pace on this, I think they jumped right on it. Let's see how long it takes to get disposed of.

I wonder if the NHL is going to bother with the face to face meeting with Peters, after the Flames go ahead and officially announce they've terminated his contract.

Meeting with a player in the locker room barely counts as “off ice” conduct from a coach

That’s well within the scope of his employment

Alright let’s have a discussion then if you think your post wasn’t stupid.

Go on and tell us more about the difference between applicable law and legal reasons for the delay.

Tell us more about how reasons = issues.

Tell us more about what makes you qualified to judge whether there are legal issues with his firing.

Lawyers have commented. There’s news stories linked in this thread that I doubt you’ve read. Give us your law background please.

So far your post appears stupid to many of us. You’ll have to educate us as to why we shouldn’t consider it an uninformed opinion.
