The longer ago it happened the worse it is for Peters in my mind. This means he has had ample time to reflect, change, and offer an apology to Aliu.

He wasn't young. It wasn't 'appropriate' or the 'norm' when he said it. This isn't naivety. There's no excuse for him to pretend he didn't know it was wrong. This isn't a case of someone who grew up in the 80s or outside of Canada calling an Indigenous person Native. It's not even a case of someone using the R word flippantly. This was just unadulterated racism....in 2008.

He didn't face repercussions then, he made no attempt to atone, he can face them now.

good question. considering he wanted Peters for a long time and this is his preferred hire, questions should be asked.

seems like Peters behaviour is common knowledge in hockey circles, (just like babcock) even if the average fan didn't know.

Maybe Treliving just figured it's a bunch of whinging from crybabies who couldn't handle a tough, no nonsense coach.

Treliving tied himself to this guy with the hire. he can't just cut and run now.

Treliving likely hires Peters knowing he is a hardass and a prick in the dressing room with a very structured game as well as his own interactions in knowing Peters. I don't think Treliving is going to call around to every player who has been coached by Peters. Not to mention, how many players wouldn't have said anything in fear of it hurting their own career.

It is inappropriate IMO to try and point any blame at Treliving unless factual evidence comes out that he knew about any of this.

On a different note, I am predicting the over in the flames next handful of games as the flames win/lose in some high scoring games as they abandon some of the structure.

The trouble is, it’s hard to speak out on a Head Coach who’s won the franchise 5 Super Bowls. The fanbase would almost immediately disregard accusations agains Belichik

Which kinda begs the question... if Peters has coached the Flames to 5 Stanley Cups, would everyone be just as eager to have Peters fired?

In trelivings interview just now he said he had no knowledge of this sort of behaviour surrounding Peters. He acknowledged that it was a surprise to him.

I think more likely the prior silence on this is more about how the ground of hockey culture is shifting beneath our very feet. More likely, this is the kind of thing that players have historically kept to themselves, and within their own tight circles. Given the history of hockey culture it would come as no surprise that virtually all players were once loathe to speak to management about these sorts of issues. THAT is the big change we are now seeing take place.

His targeted hire.

I don’t think it stains him at all. People are really good at hiding crap behind closed doors. Does NBC get held accountable for all the heinous crap Cosby did during the time his shows was the biggest thing on earth?

It’s definitely not tolerated anymore, but I wouldn’t say it’s completely gone yet. Wasn’t there a player or two in the last few years who were suspended for that language?

Treliving knew he used racist language 10 years ago and that he physically accosted players? Give your head a shake.

People who are racist don't do this though. Peters probably barely remembers it, like Justin.

It's not like Brad just hired some random guy off the streets. They met when Peters was coaching team Canada...that is a pretty solid reference. Some other top hockey minds saw fit to give Peters a high level position.

BT skipped over the "intangibles" with his guy.

Wow.

He failed.

We don’t know that. The racist stuff can’t be held against him as it’s only now come to light. Who knows if Peters physically assaulting his players was also kept under wraps. Hockey culture has a weird level of tolerance and secrecy about stuff like this.

I'm glad it's come to the forefront. But it's also terrifying to see someone's career ruined in less then 24 hours from someone's tweet.

Not saying that Aliu wasn't right in doing it (absolutely a good thing he did it). But as an observer of how much social media is now ingrained in our daily lives and how easy it is for someone's message to reach the masses, it's absolutely wild to see this unfold in real-time.
But this didn't happen in 24 hours. This is about consistent deplorable behavior decades in the making. The only thing that changed in the last 24 hours is the pubic knowledge of it.

It sounds like Peters got what was coming to him. He ruined his own career, nobody else did that to him.

No. I already said he wouldn't have known about the racism. But to think he didn't know about Peter's reputation as a hard ass that nobody liked is very naive. A very minimal amount of due diligence would have brought up those details from Carolina. I'm saying he took those traits as a positive.

Is it normal for a GM to interview players from other teams regarding a potential coaching hire? Seems about as likely as a top level executive calling me to discuss hiring my boss. What are the odds someone has something negative to say about their former boss? 50%? How much weight can you put into that? (obviously excluding reviews of physical contact and racial slurs).

I would wager most current NHL coaches have smacked a guy or two in the helmet...I mean there is video of one doing it during a game.

Assault? I don't know, need more info
