I'm surprised so many people here jump on Aliu's side, I know nothing about this player, didn't even know that he once was in the Flames' organization. But while racism's slur is serious offence, a person's reputation is also important. If after the investigation and proved Aliu telling the truth, yah, fire Peters. But what if it turns out that Aliu made all that up?

yeah... this is a problem that the organization and Peters will need to address...

I like Peters, but cannot square the accusations with the guy in front of the microphone...

If he has done that in this organization, it think he would have to be fired... but years ago in Detroit? Its a bit of a tougher question imo.

People can evolve and grow and attitudes held in the past may no longer be the case.

Definitely disappointing to hear though

The big issue to me here is there are never isolated issues. If he felt comfortable dropping that stuff casually and taking advantage of the power from his position, then it’s going to likely be a pattern of behaviour. Could open up a really large discussion with multiple scenarios. I agree with those that would like to reserve their opinion and see how this plays out. Fingers crossed it’s an isolated incident and some context missing.

Treliving isn't going to say anything more than that in a post-game scrum.

He has to talk to Peters, and likely also get legal advice.

I can't speak to Aliu's history, but I've had a small handful of interactions with the guy (during his time in Calgary). A happy-go-lucky sort, kind yet short tempered, very thoughtful, clearly someone who has dealt with a lot, and a very candid speaker. For sure an odd duck who marches to the beat of his own drum.
I can see how he rubbed some people the wrong way.

However, I didn't get the sense he is malicious and/or a straight up liar. But typically, these situations have many shades of grey.

Sidebar - due to how much I listen to, I might be entirely numb to the word. I can find myself dropping lines that contain ‘n bombs’ pretty often, and I don’t think that’s racist in the slightest.

As for Peters, I suspect he called it ‘###### music’. Not appropriate. Unfortunately, it was and still is a very common thing to hear. Seriously, if the notion of that being the case shocks you, you just didn’t spend enough time in certain places to hear that derogatory term.

I really struggle with the whole, "Person A" did something terribly harmful years ago therefore Person A must lose their job.

Person A must atone for their wrongdoings, no doubt but is losing a job that they started many years later the correct response? It is such a tricky situation. In some cases, yes. However how does the general public know about the character of the accused? The general public is going to call for the accused to be let go. The general public doesn't know if the accused got carried away or did something with mean intent. The public doesn't know if the accused has since realized that they handled a situation poorly and have determined to become a better person. The public just doesn't know, yet many of the public will be calling for Peters to never work again.

On the flipside, maybe the accused is still that terrible person. Then yes, they need to answer for what they did. Coaching won't be in the cards if Peters is that person and hasn't changed.

Nobody should be quick to jump to conclusions and make judgements. This needs to be investigated and the appropriate people should make the decisions without undue pressure from the public.

The accuser should also be believed though too. Because if not then in the future other accusers won't be so confident to speak up about how they have been hurt.

Tough situation all around.

If Treliving does back Peters through this, he could be in a tough spot. Worst case, the Flames keep losing under Peters and more supporting evidence of Aliu's claims comes out later. Treliving's decisions damage both the on-ice success of the team and the organization's reputation. That would likely cost Treliving his job in addition to Peters' job. It would also damage Treliving's reputation.

Fire him now, and there's a chance to reset a bad start to the season and keep a positive image for the organization. The team has been trending down under Peters' coaching since March of last year anyways.

Would Treliving be willing to risk putting his own job and reputation on the line for a coach that hasn't been getting success out of the team in the last 9 months and is coming to the end of a disastrous month? He would need to really believe in Peters as a coach and as a person to feel there is an upside worth risking it all for.

Not really. You just accept that there are things you can't say or do and you should be fine.

like many of you said there's no place for racism in Hockey or The NHL .I'd like to know why he didn't come forward early.im sorry but if it was any other player said this I would believe him more then Akim Aliu .Akim like to play the race card when he was here .if it's TRUE Peter's has to go

It certainly doesn't have to be one or the other, it very well could be a situation where both people involved are bad people. Like you said, shades of grey. I'm just saying knowing both of their histories, until it's anything more than just his word I'm not buying it.

And if it does turn out to be true I'll be the first person rallying against Peters. I just can't do that based on Aliu's word alone.

I agree with you having grown up there, Canada encourages and embraces differences and diversity. 2 important factors that have encouraged and brought about that change is education and speaking up! I now live in the South so I can relate to what you are saying. I am always will be proud to be a Canadian, Canadians are very upfront, they like to talk about things, and are not afraid to rock the boat. Here in the South often a problem doesn't get resolved because no one wants to talk about it, it is somewhat ingrained and a hard thing to change. Be proud to be Canadian because if your looking for people with leadership that's where you find them in spades! Lots of good things here too, people are outgoing and friendly, loads of sunshine and winters are short. I now have to shovel my walks once or twice a year!!

Even if this isn't true, I think Peters is gone in the next few days.

I’m confused. You called him a piece of crap but then said you only know him through second hand stories during your time in junior. You don’t know the guy and are blasting him as a piece of crap based on what, exactly?
