I looked him up and am listening to one of his videos right now. He's an ex-communicated scientologist who worked in special effects and went to China to work in their film industry and made a hit film or something like that. He's gotten an extremely rosey view of China and has really embraced their culture. I think his message starts in a place of sincerity, but is likely being strongly encouraged to spread that message to the west.

That said, I'm finding his videos to be interesting, he's good at breaking down chinese culture and history, and making it meaningful to western sensibilities. I wouldn't set my watch by anything he says, but I like the perspective he offers and I've always been a little too quick to dismiss chinese culture and history, so I plan to listen to some more.

Just the ones that expose western disinfo and hypocrisy I guess. His video titles are pretty straightforward. Another good channel to check out is Gweilo60. He’s a guy from Saskatchewan who talks about his experiences with China do his opinion on how the west views China, so he’s got the Canadian point of view as well. Here’s a good one:

Today I learned the term Wu Mao 五毛. It translates to fifty cent, which is reportedly what shills for the CPP get paid per post.

At first I was like But he's not shilling for the China Petroleum Pipeline Bureau.

then I was like, nope he's not a Liberal Party Hack promoting the Canada Pension Plan.

Then I thought it was some kind of Furry thing.

then I got it.

That is the most rambling, empty, boring video. It's like if Grandpa Simpson had a youtube channel. Wow. How do you listen to that?

Knowing what we now know about China anyone regurgitating the CCP talking points must be one of the following:

1. Brainwashed 50 cent army.
2. Has business interests.
3. Is a totalitarian that is jealous of the CCP surveillance and persecution of muslims.

Before posting any pro mainland propaganda please provide a disclaimer stating which category you are in.

AnonymousStranger-
OK, so I watchedGweilo60 one. I agree withJohnnyB. It was rambling nothingness. I don't know one point I was supposed to take away from that.

I watched a few of Nate's, and I don't get it. He's accusing the west of hypocrisy, but only in that China should be allowed to do what the West does. He talks about Google and Facebook shouldn't be allowed in China due to manipulating results or not removing stuff, but then China does the same? Except in China it is far worse, becuase while Facebook and Google may allow anyone to post anything (including, ironically, this guy's youtube channel bashing them, while collecting their money) China blocks whatever they feel like. So here, I can see an antivaxer facebook page, but then I can go and verify the information myself. Maybe I use Bing, or DuckDuckGo if I don't trust Google's algorithms. The point is, the info is out there, and I can find it. In China, it is blocked. You see what the state wants you to see, and no more than that.

I just used Baidu to see what it had to find on the Tienanmen massacre. Big surprise. Nothing.

Anyway, all I got from Nate's video is "China good, West bad". But hey, I could only guess at what you wanted me to see, as you didn't provide anything specific. Just arm wavy "watch his videos" which, from the ones I watched are all arm wavy and without any critical thought. And a lot of it was also nonsense, like his using a google search that brought a news article up that had seem facts in it, and somehow trying to argue that that was the worst thing ever.

Anyway, have you gotten around to watching what I posted yet? Note that that was from real journalists, not some Youtube guys with the credentials of living in China, and wanting a green card. If you have any real points to be made from people qualified to do so, I'd be happy to watch those.

Hong Kong was one of my favorite destinations the last 10 years for vacation. A fantastic mix of old and new in the city for whatever mood I was in that day. I don't know if it's ever going to be the same after this mess and that's sad.

Off-topic, but not worthy of its own thread.

Taiwan has re-elected President Tsai Ing-Wen in a landslide (57% - 38%). Her party, the DPP favors a more independence-minded stance towards Beijin, and the Hong Kong protests loomed large in the elections here.

With this election win by the DPP, I'm gonna go out on a limb and say there is no possibility of Taiwan becoming part of China peacefully, at the very least while Xi Jinping is alive, and more likely while the CCP rule China.

There is no possibility of Taiwan becoming part of China peacefully ever. It was war that created modern day Taiwan in the first place.

That’s not true, during the Jintao and Zemin years (1993-2012) there was enough perceived openness in China as well as significant economic growth which led a lot of people in Taiwan to think it would be beneficial to be a bigger version of Hong Kong.

Thank goodness that idea never gained too much traction.

Taiwanese may have just achieved a Pyrrhic victory by "sticking it to China" because at the end of the day it will only serve to increase the Chinese effort to cause economic suffering on Taiwan leading to more brain drain, divestment and loss of the Chinese market.
