I don’t really hate the coach or the GM. I think the GM has made some mistakes, and is in a critical period. It’s an interesting time for Tree. Does he double down with this core, does he simply ride stuff out and hope it turns, or does he come to the conclusion something with his core is simply broken and look to make a change.

I’m firmly in the keep Tree and keep Peters camp. I don’t think it’s realistic to expect a GM, a player, or a coach to be perfect - mistakes get made.

As far as solutions go, I think the lack of a high-end #2 centre and the lack of a top six scoring winger is hard to resolve. Tree has tried, only to fail. He’s been on a 16 month cold-streak, and if he can’t get the trade or the signing done in that period of time, perhaps the only solution is to do it through the draft.

I’d sell Brodie and Hammer for picks this year and put a lot of faith in Andersson, Hanifin, and Kylington. Don’t abandon the year, just rely on youngsters. Peters has a history with young defenders. I’d then seriously evaluate the current core group in the offseason although I don’t think they’re a problem, I think they need to be added to.

Some of us come in here to enjoy a win but it instantly turns into the resident experts telling everyone what the team did wrong every game.
Hmm... I do agree to some extent, and am guilty of this.

Flames needed a W in the worst way, and it was pretty ugly, but they got it done.

No one is expecting a team to have a St. Louis like turnaround 2 years in a row but for shots and giggles I looked at the NHL standings this time last year.

The conference finalists Hurricanes were outside the playoff picture and the Sabres were in it.

The Islanders were outside the playoffs and the Rangers were in.

Vegas was outside, Anaheim was in and Minnesota was 2nd in the conference.

It’s a long season, lots can still happen. Team just needs to find their A game.

They absolutely can turn it around and make the playoffs, especially with Rittich playing so well.

I’m just afraid that if that happens and they get totally crushed again in the first round, we’ll forget about how brutal this stretch was and treat another playoff failure as another learning curve. Hopefully I’m just completely wrong about everything and they win a couple rounds in the playoffs or hell, maybe they even win the cup.

But if none of that happens, something major needs to change.

I'd kill for a dominant 60 minute effort, but this is pretty crazy:

That actually looks like a set play, rather than a lucky bounce.

If it is, that's some serious top flight level of working the angles. Perhaps they spend a lot if time at the pool table.

When you are down as a team and nothing is going your way, sometimes you just have to grind out a dirty win, that was a dirty win. It's not pretty, it seems like you don't deserve the victory but you fought for it to the very end and got rewarded for your efforts.
Hopefully that was this game and the flames can move forward and upward from here. Its frustrating but thats the life of a sports/flames fan.

Although you don’t want to be in that position, the Flames execution of the 6 on 5 when we pulled Rittich was some of our best crafted play this season.

Lindholm was too wide to be able to do a deflection or cash in a rebound, and the timing of his arrival in that spot looked intentional. He was skating straight ahead rather than driving the net. And he was on his off wing to give him the best possible angle for the shot.

It’s a lot harder than intentionally missing on the near side, though.

Wait, do people actually think Rasmus missed an attempted shot on net there?

As awesome as it is to believe he did that on purpose, he said they had moved the puck around for a long time and he just wanted to put a puck towards the net, for what it’s worth

I still like to believe it was intentional though. Makes it more impressive

It’s not even an uncommon play in the league. Hell, guys in my beer league make this play. I almost got beat on it just the other night. Luckily I didn’t have to deal with Lindholm finishing it.

Impressive, until you realize what it really means...

I think it was a set play. Especially since Andersson would likely have grown up idolizing Nik Lidstrom, who used this play at least once a night.

My biggest worry is that Peters doesn't really know the strengths and weaknesses of the players, and this is making the players frustrated.

It would explain the excellent last 10 minutes of every game, if the team abandons the system (that doesn't suit them), and plays to their strengths.

That doesn't look good on the coach.

how do you reconcile the fact that this team, with virtually same lineup, won the western regular season title last year then, if 'Peters doesn't really know the strengths and weaknesses of the players, and this is making the players frustrated.'?

This included a number of them having career highs in points/goals what have you...

Agree with this. Why else would he not try Lindholm at centre for an extended time when he appears he could be what we are so desperately needing. Then cycle through the young wingers here and on the farm ro see if anything catches.

The problem with having Lindholm centre his own line is it leaves Mony and Johnny with no help defensively. Those two suck in their own end. That’s the reason they haven’t moved Lindholm to centre. Until they can find a two way defensively responsible winger for those two, Lindholm is going to spend most of his time with them.

And no, the answer is not Frolik.

The answer was Mark Stone.
