Maybe. Treliving isn't going to panic, of that I'm certain. I don't know if trading John is the right move but I do have confidence in Treliving's trading skills.

Im sure the return would definitely wow you.

Not to be a smart ass but Johnny only has 2 more years. Managment will have to be pretty certain he's either going to re sign or not by next year in order to get anything meaningful back in a trade if it's the latter.

Absolutely. If it makes your team better in the long run anyone is tradable.

Trade if you can get decent value back.
I'm not convinced he'll re-sign with the Flames unless they manage to turn things around quickly. I don't want the team to hold on too long until he's nearly a UFA and his value bottoms out.

If...
1. Treliving doesn't think Johnny will sign another long term deal here
2. The team continues to sputter this year
3. The return is amazing
...I'd be OK dealing Gaudreau next off season.
I'm also open to keeping him and exploring other 'shake up' options if #2 rings true.
One things for sure though, if you trade Johnny you had better hit a home run with the return. Young core pieces that you can lock up long term just like when Treliving dealt Hamilton to the Canes.

What does him re signing or not have to do with the return right now?
Someone would be trading for 2.5 years of 6.75M johnny gaudreau. He is not a rental.

My point was just that he's only under contract for two more seasons. Yeah, if traded now the new team has him for 2.5 years. I was just adding my opinion on how to get max value back for him if traded and I think that means you'd want to do it in this summer's offseasons at latest.

I'm case you haven't noticed Brad's tendencies, he would trade Johnny for Ryan Nugent Hopkins then replace Peters with Craig McTavish.

Can't waste picks on guys like stone and lazar when you're not in any kind of contention window. Hamonic for a 1st and 2x2nds is looking absolutely terrible at this point.

And all the goalie trades. And the weird deadline rentals of depth players. Not all premium picks obviously, but they add up.

And his last year has a 5 team NTC. Next year is the real window, probably after his bonus is paid.

A 3rd for Stone was a fine trade and helped the team make the playoffs. Re-signing him after overpaying for Hamomic and then costing the team another pick and $3.5M in cap space was a mistake.
Lazar was a risk I didn’t mind at the time but clearly was a mistake.
Hamomic was a clear mistake though. This team was not as close as they appeared in 4 tough losses to the Ducks in 2017. He also thought that Brodie-Hamomic would form a second top pairing that would help the team against McDavid. Clearly a bad move as well.
In terms of free agent signings he would be better off sitting on his wallet altogether. People can rip him for it but I hope they also realize we are a bottom 3-5 market in the NHL and by no means a destination for players.
As bad as the Neal signing turned out to be i loved the move at the time. He was a top 5 UFA and they signed him for less than the 6x6 he was rumored to be looking for.

I was reading somewhere that according to Advanced Stats, we are just damned unlucky, shooting percentage wise. Yes, the Flames have made some egregious mistakes, that seem to all lead to opposing goals. But once things normalize, I think it'll be a salvageable season.
There is still ~75% of the season left. Let this team work it's way out of the funk, and get back to normalizing stats. Trading a core piece like Johnny would be like when we traded Phaneuf in some ways. We'd get pennies on the dollar, and be regretting it forever.
I think Johnny is just snakebitten like crazy. He's been playing better, but as the team goes, so does he. He played really well the first half last night, until things hit the skids, and the WHOLE team gave up, not just him.
I think the answer is in the room. They're not having fun playing, you can tell. Once they start winning/scoring, things will ease up and it'll come.

I don't know, maybe it is a case of if Gaudreau goes, it helps to grow Monahan as a player. It gets him to play with possession more, and maybe he works with Tkachuk over an extended period.
But it has to be the right package in return that doesn't close a window with this core in the next few years. A high end forward with size, blue chip prospect on the cusp that can join the fold in that time frame, and a top 10 pick type of return.
Because Johnny could very well go on to put up 100 point seasons in a new environment at a cheap price tag. The cost for that has to be steep.

I don't think it's horrible, especially if the Flames finished where they were supposed to. Hamonic is still a top 4 D and that's a late first rounder. Instead it was a middle pick.

if #1 is correct, you might need to trade him for the best offer. His trade value will only continue to decrease as he gets closer to UFA. At that stage, you can't be looking at an amazing return, only FMV, whatever that might be.
If Johnny has a 65 point season, his return will not be amazing.
I do expect, worse case scenario, he hits at least 75 points.

A lot of draft capital to give up which has weakened our prospect pool and not moved the team forward. The team wasn’t nearly as good as Treliving thought when he made the deal. Had the team made the playoffs in 2018 they would have owed the Yotes and 2nd for Smith and we would still owe the Islanders a 2nd this summer for that trade.
Missing the playoffs meant we have the Yotes a 3rd and the Islanders get the 12th pick in the draft.
I don’t think it was a disaster trade but it certainly has not worked out the way the team hoped and they paid a stiff price

Taking a while to get to 5000

The good news is they'll likely recover a late 1st for Hamonic this spring.
