Artificial Christmas Trees

Looking to tap into the research gurus on CP.

It appears our Christmas tree is on its last year. One set of lights has kicked the bucket and we’ve had it close to ten years now, so it’s had a good run. We will be looking to pick something up after Christmas. Any tips or tricks? Not looking to break the bank, but willing to pay a bit to get something that will last another decade. I’m thinking stores like the Bay and Home Depot will be our best bets? Maybe check out wayfair too? Thanks in advance!

The answer is always Costco. I saw some really nice trees there last week.

I always find that the Bay was really overpriced for anything Christmas.

Superstore has some pretty darn decent options on the mid end of the scale. Costco ones are more expensive, but nicer as it has less gaps between branches.

We bought a pretty convincing fake tree from Canadian Tire last year for around $150(?)
I didn't even think to check costco, but we're pretty happy with the purchase.

Michaels sells trees too, and they go on sale all the time

Costco and Loews would be my suggestions. Also, I was talking to a client this week who just purchased a new tree from Canadian Tire and she said they had a good selection and good prices.

Yes - pre-light trees are the best. I've only had one for about 6 years and couldn't believe what a treat it is to put up a pre-light tree. The best invention ever.

I would echo what others have said. The Bay is not usually a good "sale".

I would go with Canadian Tire or Costco.

Can I sorta hijack the thread a bit to ask advice regarding Xmas trees and cats?

We've got a nearly one year old kitten thats into everything and am thinking of giving it a pass this year due to it's probably going to see the tree as a giant play structure and the risk of tinsel ingestion.

Was thinking about one of those more modern ones. They be safer?

You can still get a tree, just don't put tinsel on it and put the decorations you hate the most on the bottom.

Three years ago we sprayed the bottom branches of our tree with a bitterant that is supposed to deter cats from chewing things. Don't do this - didn't stop the cats one bit and every year since we end up with this gross stuff on our hands.

But yeah - don't use tinsel (deadly!) and don't put anything on the tree you really care about, even higher up. One of our cats liked tackling our tree in the midsection and brought the whole thing to the ground a couple of times.

We got a good one at Canadian Tire on clearance about a week before Xmas a few years ago. If they're still doing the same thing this year they start doing pretty big (40%+) discounts the week before Xmas. Still had decent selection at that time, so you might have more options if you start shopping before boxing week.

we did that too. got a $300 tree several years ago at Canadian tire for $150.
has the lights built in, and came with a remote control. the lights could also switch from white to colour, or blinking.
this is year 4 for the tree, and still in perfect shape.

I got a CT tree on clearance about 15 years ago for ~ $40 with the built in lights. Still going strong! I think it is NOMA brand.

So far, seem to be some good deals at Michaels and Canadian Tire, but my plan is to wait it out and try and get something on Boxing Day. Will report back what I found then.
