Yup. Nothing more than status signalling and its own form of prejudice. "Its not us he was talking about, its the other immigrants!".. This is why the us vs them messaging is so problematic.

Or maybe it's not such a cut and dry issue and there is room for varying opinions and takes on the matter.

They actually have nuanced opinions based on their own values and experiences. One of them even said they felt ashamed that their parents wouldn't wear poppies. Or would you rather just keep making up their opinions on your own?

You're right about racism in Canada. But stomping it out only chases it into the shadows. It doesn't go away. There are better ways to enlighten others.

It doesn't help that the sponsor for Coach's Corner had to release a statement as well.

Quote:
Budweiser, the sponsor of “Coach’s Corner,” released a statement later Monday afternoon condemning Cherry’s comments.

“The comments made Saturday on Coach’s Corner were clearly inappropriate and divisive, and in no way reflect Budweiser’s views,” said the statement from Todd Allen, vice-president of marketing for Labatt Breweries of Canada, which has Budweiser as one of its brands.

I'm an immigrant. I'm going to miss Coach's Corner. Not for the analysis, just the nostalgia factor.
Cherry should've apologized, maybe then he would still have his job; that was never going to happen though. Still I really wish he wasn't fired on such this specific day.
Cherry shouldn't have been divisive in his rant. It does sound like he saw a lot of non-white people not wearing poppies, and assumed they're immigrants being ungrateful. I know some (Asian) people in Toronto, they're not all Canadians, some are permanent residents, international students, people on work visa. It would be nice if they donated, but I don't blame them for not wearing poppies. They don't really have a duty to do so. We as Canadians should be leading by example. I did notice fewer people wearing poppies this year. Let's not forget this tradition.
Anecdote: in my family of immigrants, one person became a Canadian citizen, never bothers donating to the Legion; one never applied for citizenship, buys a poppy most years.
It is quite possible they did donate and are not wearing a poppy or accidentally misplaced it. How can you tell that by just walking around and looking at people. Yeah it is easy to assume they didn’t, and more then likely a person would be right, but you know what they say about assume.

That's up to them, that's their decision, their shame, their problem. They don't need to preach to immigrants as a whole segment of the population about it. Not wearing poppies is not an immigrant issue.

I think you're right. My parents are 1st gen Canadian citizens and they're both a bit baffled at the general reaction to Cherry's comments. They've seen racism first hand - my dad still remembers being discriminated against in job interviews in the 70s and 80s, my mom remembers being told to "Go home, [slur]" right here in Calgary, but they both think that Cherry's intent was in the right place even if his language was divisive.

I don't think you know what that means because that's not what's happening here. I would hope that all people not scapegoat immigrants. Even other immigrants. That sets everyone at the same standard.

Sure it isn't. Any immigrant that disagrees is only doing it for status signal reasons. They can't possibly think for themselves. Someone should educate them.

They can think for themselves and be as wrong as Don Cherry.

To be fair, from blaming the CBC to referencing the chilling effect and not knowing the definition of racism, "I don't think you know what that means" has been a fair assessment of the majority of your comments in this thread.

From coaches corner? There is no "we" firing Don Cherry. That's between him and his employer. Like it would be with any individual representing their company.

I didn't like the way Ron Maclean threw Don under the bus when he apologized.

After all their years together, that was quite disappointing.

Don't know, I don't read your facebook feed and I can't pass judgement on comments I've never read. Odd question.

Ah, the ad hominem appears. But I'm sure I'm using that wrong, too. What if I told you I was an immigrant? Does that make you a racist?

Spoiler!

Stop fighting pedantry with pedantry. It's so pedantic.
