Firing Cherry is a cut and dried free market business decision.
He's toxic to a money losing brand.
Lol @ all the cancel culture arguments.

Agreed. You will also notice that in the Post article they have not provided an accurate, complete transcription of the offending comment:
Quote:
“You people … you love our way of life, you love our milk and honey, at least you can pay a couple bucks for a poppy or something like that,” Cherry said Saturday night on the popular “Coach’s Corner” segment.

Clearly not cancel culture. No one is putting words in his mouth or re-framing his words to make him look worse than it was. He has now admitted to fully meaning what he was saying. Sportsnet is justified in its response.

Wonder how Rogers stands to benefit or suffer financially from this move... obviously Cherry commanded an enormous salary but one would figure HNiC stands to lose a fair amount of advertising revenue from giving him the axe? I'm sure tons of people will tune in this week out of curiosity but it will be near-impossible to replace Cherry, controversies or not.

I get more mad at white Canadians that don't wear a poppy, or have the manners to take their hat off at a remembrance day service, they should know better, some guy off the boat from some other country why would I expect him to have a clue?

"You" love "our" milk and honey.
That is it in a nutshell. There are immigrants and there is us, you know, the "real" Canadians.
I don't know what is in Cherry's heart but he had every chance to clarify.
This isn't about entitled young people.
This isn't about honoring veterans.
This isn't about reminding Canadians to cherish what they have.
It is about us and them.

Best way to keep your poppy on is to buy a small Canada flag pin and put it in the centre of the poppy to hold it on. You'll never lose another poppy.

I've felt Brian Burke was being essentially groomed for this when he was first hired by Sportsnet.
I expect HNIC to continue on without a beat to be honest: the vast majority of ppl tune in to watch hockey...If i am not tuning in for Friedman, Intermission is time to grab a beer, use the washroom or channel surf to another game for me.

I'm surprised anybody has even watched HNIC since they let TSN buy the rights to the song.

The language that used in defending cherry was bad. It wasn't surprising which is part of the reason I left the countryside to a urban environment.

This is from 6 years ago.

For supporters of public broadcasting, it can be hard not to look at this deal as the CBC reaping what they've sown. For the better part of the last decade, Don Cherry's HNIC has become an advertisement for the Canadian Armed Forces and the government's foreign, imperialist adventures. Under the auspices of hockey commentary, Cherry has been given a platform to vent his xenophobic, pro-violence and sexist rants without consequence, and the more unhinged he became, the more CBC decided they needed him. His offences number far too many to catalogue here, but you could do worse than start here, here or here.
And of course, who could be prouder than the CBC when Cherry showed up in Toronto wearing a pink suit to give the inauguration address for the then-new mayor Rob Ford, in happier times. "I say he’s going to be the greatest mayor this city has ever seen,” Cherry said. "you can put that in your pipe you left-wing kooks.” Hello Canada and hockey fans in the United States and Newfoundland. The voice of the CBC.

Shoulda been gone years ago. Can't remember the last time he said something on air that I agreed with, or even really understood as an English sentence.
This type of thing was inevitable with the way he was. Like Bob Cole, the network(s) just held onto their legacies for too long and they became parodies of themselves.

I have a feeling Hrudey is also being asked to do the segment. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=X_doxtbbj08
I agree with you on how Sportsnet and HNIC will continue on.

Then your poppy isn't a poppy. You need the green or black centre IMO.
It's really meant to be worn in a lapel when you can stick it in the edge. It's hard with a shirt (or blouse presumably). Safety pin is the best answer.

This works for me, now I don't have to turn the channel between the first and second period as I have been doing for about 25 years.

He totally took it in the immigrant direction. And hes not adlibbing. It's a prepared segment on this weekend.
He could have said, i dont see kids wearing poppies. Hey you young people who have reaped the benefits of this county and are sitting there eating avocado toast. Get your head out of your ass and support the troops.

Well, perhaps not the only people - I should have said the vast majority of people offended by this are white people trying to out PC each other. Most VM’s and immigrants I’ve talked to actually agree that the rate of remembrance poppy wearing is low among newer immigrants and visible minorities - I’d argue moreso due to economic factors and a lack of awareness of Canada’s military history than due to any genuine ill will towards our veterans, but what he said is an uncomfortable truth.

Sure Don Cherry should be held accountable for his words.
The only thing is, that this happens so close to an election where Canada made it ok to insult and attack women, insult foreign people on their own soil and have a past of bigotry.
I'm not even that political, or buy-in to the need for a right and left divide, but Canada needs to pick a lane here.
