I am afraid that all decency and common sense which most of Canadians are known for has completely gone out the window. Most people nowadays are more concerned with Political Correctness than actually comprehending what the comments tha Grapes made were really about(that is if most of you even remember English Comprehension that you were supposed to have taken in school).
Cherry was NOT TALKING about ALL immigrants, especially those who have been Canadians for generations, and their forefathers fought for and died for Canada. No, he was talking about recent refugees even mentioning Markham and the greater Toronto area where the vast majority of these recent immigrants are esconsed in hotel rooms at taxpayers expense! Sportsnet has been looking for an excuse to get rid of Cherry, since they took over HNIC broadcasts. So to those detractors of Cherry, you finally got your wish.
Our Canadian Constitution anc Charter of Rights guarantees Freedom of Speech and Expression which is what Grapes was doing! I never got a subscription to Sportsnet, too damnned expensive. My own personal protest will be however, never to watch HNIC again or to listen to 960 the fan broadcasts of the Flames ever again, and I hope that others will do the same.
Ron Mclean you showed your true colours I hope Cherry cuts you off his great number of friends! As for Sportsnet and all the Politically Correct, do a physical impossibility with yourselves, engage your brain before putting your mouths in gear, and use your head for something other than a resting place for a couple of ears!!

Wow... You should write for The Beaverton. They couldn't do a better parody of "guy on the wrong side of every issue" if they tried.
Time to close the thread, folks. No one's topping that.

It was always bound to end this way for Don Cherry.
It is a shame that more people don't wear poppies, and you can count me among those who agree with his message, just not the way he said it.
If you live in Canada (and I don't care how long you've lived here) you better damn well show support for those who have made your way of life possible.

I don’t think freedom of speech covers what you say when you are representing a company. But I do agree bad day to do it. This day seems more about that then about what the day is meant to be.

It seems to me that this is actually something that everyone in this thread does in fact understand on various levels. The racial profiling on display here is still disgusting.

Well you're the self proclaimed text critic, I'm sure you could decipher the basics of what I was getting at. I included every single person I saw in the outlined time period … that was the objectivity. Was my location random and wholly representative? No, of course not. Time frame and other variables accounted for? No. I felt that was pretty clear … and I feel bad rambling on as long as I did.
"Just sayin" = take it how you want. Don't take it, as I really don't care. But essentially every element of this thread is opinion, starting with Cherry's.

Where is the evidence that Don Cherry meant anything different from what he actually said?

Actually, the Charter guarantees free expression. It does not actually give an unlimited right to free speech. More to the point, the Charter is irrelevant here because Sportsnet is not an agent of the government. You have exactly no guarantee of free speech or expression against a private organization. In fact, given his history, it is very likely that Cherry's contract had clauses regarding specific behavioural habits that likely made his termination an easy decision once they felt that the damage to their brand was going to exceed the value he brought.

I see plenty of people not wearing poppies regardless of them being minorities or not...
And anyone knows that just taking a view of the street at any one time, isn't conclusive of support or non-support... those things fall off like no one's business...
I've bought 4 or 5 this year, only to have them fall off... so just because you don't happen to have one at the moment doesn't mean you haven't bought one.
Cherry's been slowly moving away from hockey and using Coach's Corner as his own personal platform for years. For me at least, i've stopped caring about watching CC for years, whereas it was probably 'must watch' 10-15 years ago

Did you count the number of "non-white" people in your survey? Did you count the number of white people who were also not wearing poppies? Did you account for the multiple, various reasons for why anyone you saw was without a poppy? Did you bother to consider that wearing a poppy in no way correlates to the vague idea of "support" for Canada's military, or is an indicator of patriotism?

So, why did you "just say" what you said in the first place? Is there a good reason to undertake the survey that you attempted to do? What did you hope to demonstrate through this exercise?
I mean, my opinion of your actions and your report is pretty unflattering. It looks to me like you don't understand the first thing about science, statistics, correlation and causation, and have an incredibly shallow view of what it means to be Canadian. If you intended me to understand something different, then you will most certainly need to clarify.

I think Rogers wanted him gone for a while now, but was worried about the backlash. Cherry gave them a perfect opportunity so they weren't going to waste it.

100 times this. I have no option but to believe he meant what he said. Full stop.
The apologists that want to try and claim otherwise and starting to really sicken me. This whole incident is a shame but this is what he deserves IMO for promoting this kind of attitude towards immigrants.
Maclean is lucky for slithering his way out of this.

Rumours are endless right now on radio and internet. The best one is that Ron MacLean could be the next one to get terminated. The resurrection of Kelly Hrudey "Behind the Mask." Don Cherry having a one time guest appearance on RDS or TVA Sports.

No, it doesn't. That's the States you are thinking of that have that.
This one we do have. But, as usual, folks (you) misunderstand how this applies. The government is not stifling Cherry's speech. The private company he works for has decided they don't want him speaking for them, and/or they don't want to provide him a platform, which they are not obligated to do.
He can say what he wants, he's just not exempt from the consequences of it. He's also not even been "de-platformed"...he's free to take his views 'on the road' to other various media outlets if he wants...if they'll have him.

Expecting class on an anonymous message board is expecting a lot. Using that word to describe a fellow poster would get you banned here for sure. But I think it's OK to name call public figures (and Americans I've noticed).
Would calling Gaudreau that word get you banned? I think you'd have to do it repeatedly.

This was a joke
I referred to you as 'you people' and talked about you 'coming here'.
I was amused by this, pretty much solely.
