Again, you people was probably ok.

It's the "come here" that killed him.

Don Cherry says “you people” during one of his incoherent ramblings without make up on, or without raising a hand to a woman - and the whole nation piles on and destroys a Canadian icon and turns him into an absolute villain.

I won’t stand by Don Cherry on what he said, but I think it’s a damn rotten shame that people no longer seem to believe in anything. Their focus is sporadic and self serving. Perhaps it has always been that way, but the way people pick and choose what to support...it’s as incoherent and inconsistent as even the craziest of Don Cherry rants.

Damn shame things have played out this way.
I don’t think SN has the power to choose the prime minister or ban Chris Brown’s music from Canada.

Why would CBC have a say in the decision to fire someone else's employee? CBC has no rights to HNIC nor control over Cherry. They basically just give Rogers the time slot. That's it.

Ultimately, Cherry's refusal to apologize likely did him in. As far as the future goes, I can't say I will ever have much interest in listening to Brian Burke's rants. He's basically a drier, less interesting Don Cherry.

Don was great guy and he would talk hockey with anyone. I personally met him at the Westin hotel in Edmonton in 2006, he was still sharp in those days and we talked about the Carolina-Edmonton series that was on at the time.

In a way it’s not a bad way for him to go, from a verbal perspective, he lived by the sword, and it appears he died by the sword.

The problem you're having is ascribing the actions of one undefined selection of people to another undefined selection of people.

Like, do you think it's the same group of the exact same people that voted for Trudeau, got fired Don Cherry, and bought up all the Chris Brown albums? That doesn't even make sense.

And "the whole nation piles on"? We can barely get a majority consensus on this message board, but it's the whole nation?

Default Don Cherry - Could His Time Finally Be Up? [UPDATE] Yes. Fired by SN.

His comments made could've made his point clearer with a few additional or different choice of some simple words, however Don has never been a wordsmith at the best of times with his rambling off the cuff style or presenting. And he's not likely to apologize for a bad choice or a word or phrasing, considering the context though he may clarify, but that wouldn't have been until next week.
I think you are assuming an awful lot here. And again, I disagree that his intent is in the first place so easily construed, and secondly that it even matters. What he said was totally inappropriate, and I expect was the last straw in a series of embarrassing mis-steps which completely exhausted the company.

Next Saturday I will tune in for the first intermission of the early game for the first time in over a decade.

Not to mention the amount of #### Trudeau and Brown get on social media for their actions. Mention Chris Brown on reddit and there’ll be about 500 comments detailing his actions. I’ve seen that detailed police report about 50 times.

In a few years - he'll be remembered fine. But his time had come.

Its all a business and Cherry was no longer on the positive side of the ledger for Rogers to put up with the controversies.

I agree mostly but he should have come out and apologized. It's a shame he decided to end his career this way but it was by his choosing ultimately as he had to know those comments would raise eyebrows.

from afar, I have honestly never understood the appeal of Don Cherrys segment. Cringy, eye-rolling stuff much of the time ... and honestly, his "good Canadian boys and soft Euros"-shtick was embarrassing at best.

That being said, I understand he's been viewed differently in Canada and firing him on Remembrance Day is in bad taste for sure. Could have handled this one a lot better.

Also, the blackface scandal was just that - a huge scandal. It dominated the news and had a significant impact on the PM’s standing. He lost a majority government and over 1 million votes. People vote based on a wide variety of factors though, not just the party leader’s character. Also the fact the Conservatives could not beat a damaged Liberal party and leader also says a lot about what Canadians felt about the Conservative platform it its leader.

The word “Sportsnet” was not used once in that post. It was a comment on society, not the network.

Well, it's not hypocrisy if it's completely different groups responsible for these outcomes, is it?

Stupid move in my opinion, but hey, is what it is. Feels like a portion of my youth is going to get ripped apart as he has been a staple for my entire life. I would have thought the end of the season would at least have been possible. Even a show where he could say a good bye piece.

In any event, some people may not like what I am about to say but so be it. It's ironic that in today's culture, everybody thinks they can do whatever they want and then all the fake apologizes come out and all is forgotten.

In this case, someone who I think is very principled on the very subject we are talking about, poppy's, Remembrance Day, supporting the troops etc has been fired. Fired for not taking the opportunity to say sorry. He felt he was right and believes in what he believes and went out with the consequences. I actually admire that.

I have zero doubt in my mind that like a lot of people, Ron actually knew what Don was referring and agreed, hence the nod and the thumbs up. In a million previous episodes where there was a disagreement, Ron would push back, take a different tone, seem surprised or shake his head.

Than the next day we get the fake apology about how he " didn't catch what was being said" and than we have the stereotypical "diversity is our strength, we believe in inclusion, our values and beliefs don't align with (insert issue being discussed)"

It's like the PR script has been written for every single wrong doing for everyone and every company and it's the same verbiage, every single time. Fake apologizes, sprinkle in the diversity and inclusion part and all is well.

At least Don, the dinosaur like everyone calls him, came from a different generation. He stood his ground and stayed truth to his beliefs right or wrong and took the firing. Other people sold out!

If Rogers and this fake BS about diversity and inclusion is so concerned with what just happened, this is a perfect opportunity to change things up. Remove Ron Maclean from Coaches Corner for his role in this mess and hire two females as the new crew. I am sure there are enough talented former players and coaches/executives that would be in the running.

Lot's of people say to hire Burke, so are we replacing a really old hockey guy with another crusty, old Irish hockey guy?? That's the "progress" everybody says needs to happen? Na, they won't hire anyone who's a visible minority for the role and they won't hire a couple of women for the role either, probably cause it won't be good for business and ratings and than the top dogs start to feel the pressure from the stock holders.

Diversity, inclusion, values and fake apologizes. Rinse and repeat. That's the what life has become

Given that Actual Remembrance Day moment of silence is on the 11th minute of the 11th hour and Everyone in the pacific time zone was doing this at 12:11 MT, I think the Brass at Rogers strategically had it timed that Cherry’s firing was announced 12:30pm (20 min as a buffer)

Why this is important is because:

1) I think they truly wanted to give Cherry enough time to change his mind and apologize

2) they didn’t want this to become a distraction leading up until the ceremonies held coast to coast

3) once the ceremonies were over, all public attention would now be completely focused on this issue. waiting any longer for his firing would have snowball even further on Remembrance Day and damage Sportsnet’s brand and reputation

Rogers/Sportsnet knew exactly when they would fire Cherry
