Why wait? If they were going to do it, might as well get it over with.

Although everyone denied it after the fact, I think it's pretty clear that the reports from the summer that Rogers was going to dump him were true and he used whatever influence he still had left to force them to keep him.
This is the convenient opportunity they've been waiting for ever since then to do what they wanted to do months ago.
It might take them a couple of weeks/months to make the switch, but I'm sure everyone planned for Burke to take over the Coach's Corner slot from the beginning. If not soon, I'd bet that Burke will be in that role by the start of the playoffs at the latest.

I doubt it. Cherry would demand the same free reign and TSN's advertisers would be reluctant.

Poor choice of words by him, especially singling out immigrants, but I agree with his overall message. To many people take this freedom we have for granted in this country. I've got two Grandfathers who fought in the war, one on the Pacific side and one on the European front. Neither could ever really talk about what they went through, but were very passionate about Remembrance Day so you could just tell the toll it took on them for us to be able to sit here today.

I hope they give the spot to Burke. Still talks the old school way but is progressive enough to keep people happy.

I’m going to assume he’s refused to apologize. If that’s the case then the decision was obvious.

What a mess, terrible way for him to go out. Even though I strongly disagree with what he said, I don't really take much joy in hearing he got canned.

Don Cherry's overall message was specifically about immigrants.

I haven't noticed that there are less poppies though so I dont know why suddenly this year was the year Cherry went off.

If you really want to know what Remembrance Day means to some people/countries, google how they remember their fallen heroes in Israel.
On their Remembrance Day at a certain time, the air raid sirens blast and the entire country comes to a complete standstill. People stop what they are doing and observe a moment of silence. Traffic on freeways comes to a stop and people get out of their cars. It really is quite an experience.

How about the fact his comments were especially hurtful due to the sacrifices immigrants have made in war fighting for Canada and how they feel getting blasted by a cultural icon on HNIC? Or any armed forces, past or present, for that matter having their day of remembrance overshadowed by this fossil.

A ‘decision to part ways’ would have been a much more dignified approach, along with announcing it tomorrow. The CBC knows damn well what this day means to the man. Say what you will about him, he’s put his time in and has been a long standing member of the organization. Give the man a bit of dignity.
Side note - people seem to be way over reacting. Anyone remember the election coverage on CBC, when a panelist actually flat out accused Albertans of being violent and intolerant, and people were ‘afraid’ to put election signs out? That’s far for derogatory, yet nary a pee about that ####.

Insensitive remarks, assimilation based for sure. Some interpret that as stereotyping, some as casual racism, some take that as hard core racism and react accordingly.
His comments made could've made his point clearer with a few additional or different choice of some simple words, however Don has never been a wordsmith at the best of times with his rambling off the cuff style or presenting. And he's not likely to apologize for a bad choice or a word or phrasing, considering the context though he may clarify, but that wouldn't have been until next week.
But with a hyper sensitive social culture driven by social media, it's condemn, scold and shame (and in this case threaten sponsors of the show) first (and whatever happens from that as a consequence), get clarification after, at the best of times.

He can still speak on another platform - podcast or youtube, if he wants. Sportsnet is not silencing him, they are dismissing an employee that does not fit what they are doing.

I gotta be honest his time is up anyways, guy is almost 90. At the very least his comments were disrespectful and Sportsnet did the right thing, they have no obligation to protect "free speech".

So they actually framed it as mutual, but it's clear he was fired.
Optically, I agree they should have waited a day. Even ignoring Cherry's reputation, this just simply does not need to be in the news on Remembrance Day. Can't help but wonder if that was a bit strategic. Or perhaps petty?
