How long is this ridiculous 'Remembrance Day' thing gonna go for? It's been 74 years since the end of Imperial World War round 2. Do we really need to keep glorifying and validating the wars of the 20th Century?
Wow. Brutal take. Wearing a poppy and having Remembrance Day is not glorifying. Dickish comment by Cherry leads to more dickish comments.

Your comment about Remeberance Day is shockingly ignorant. First and foremost, it doesn't glorify WWII and in fact predates WWII. It started as Armistice Day, honouring the date of the end of WWI and the sacrifice of the men who laid down their lives. But today it honours all of Canada's war dead, WWI, WWII, Korea, peacekeepers, and Afghanistan. So I sure hope it lasts forever.

Also I sure as hell am going to glorify a war that ended ended a tyrannical and genocidal dictator. Give your head a shake. Lest We Forget.

As long as there are people like you out there this has to continue!

Show some respect for our fallen soldiers! Argue debate all fine, dont disrespect them though.

100,000 Canadians died during the wars. Yet you are bored with this?

These people fought to allow you to be the punk you are today! Show some respect!

I have relatives that lost their lives to allow you to speak freely today! Relatives injured in combat.

Show some respect!

People died giving you the freedom you have today. Not enough for you? They still died fighting for you. For all of us!

You think their sacrifice should be ignored?

That is such an amazing take!

You are obviously a special person.Good luck with that in life!

Just like how he didn’t mind collecting a nice paycheque from the CBC for decades while bashing the government that allocated the funds so that he could get paid.

He’s a blowhard through and through.

I can't stand Cherry. He's at least 20 years past his expiry date. His hockey takes are completely out to lunch and his faux patriotism has no place in a hockey intermission. Even the one time of year when it is appropriate to bring up the military during a hockey game he can't just make it about the troops. Instead he busts out his trademark casual racism and causes a controversy all about himself.

I agree more need to be done to educate the youth and new arrivals on the sacrifices of our veterans but demanding people wear poppies is wrong. Forcing or shaming someone into wearing something is what would have happened if the Germans won the war.

Oh and Remembrance Day does not glorify war. You can recognise the futility of 20th century war and also respect the Vets. WWI was one of the most pointless obscene wastes of lives in human history and WWII handed eastern Europe from one genocidal tyrant over to another. Remembering the sacrifices of those who fell both honours their memory and can prevent us from making the same mistakes.

I have no issue with him promoting poppies. It’s a good cause. Blaming immigrants for not buying them with no actual evidence? That’s pretty ignorant in my opinion. I was watching the segment and was fine until he said the immigrant line.

I like Don but he has to keep his politics out of his rants.

That was great, except for escalating the whole thing by making it racist: "The notion that Canada's veterans were all white is dangerously wrong and an insult to thousands". Cherry never said anything about colour, nor would he.

Cherry's comments were terrible - not wearing poppies? Sure, go ahead and rant about that. But don't blame immigrants - that was ridiculous.

But now Mansbridge has upped the game and made it about colour. Very bad take on his part.

It would be funny if he did, given that he isn't a boomer.

Ironically, Cherry is from the silent generation.

Destroys? Is that what the kids are saying these days?

He adds knowledge in an article that takes longer to read than the few seconds of Cherry’s broadcast. What an achievement. That part of his take was sick.

Actually he only made a passing comment about Cherry.

But as mentioned above, he pwns himself by escalating and emphasizing colour, making it about race.

Did I do that right?

You know what I remember the most, the people who I know who didn't come back from Afghanistan or those who came back missing limbs and with hidden psychological injuries. I remember those who left part of themselves in a country a world away, those who will never be the same and whose lives will be forever impacted. Those people deserve remembrance as well.

The impact of the world wars is still long felt and it hasn't been that long. In fact if you are up in Edmonton I have a veteran who I would like for you to meet who would be able to set you straight

As the grandson of a Dieppe vet and the son of a former commissioned officer in the forces, I am saddened that the actual sacrifice of many immigrant Canadians to her Majesty in previous wars is forgotten. Throughout the former British empire, millions served the Crown in loyal service in the First and Second World Wars, and thousands of the aforesaid millions relocated to our country in later years. The punjabi community, in particular, has a 300 year tradition of proud service to the Crown. Suggesting that immigrants don't honour veterans is extremely ignorant and frankly insults other veterans in the process.

Poor mans' Don Cherry. Grapes is bang on with his remarks! If you listen to his remarks he is not speaking about the people of other races who were born in Canada (HNIC Punjab announcers and commentators who were all born in Canada I'll bet). He was talking about recent immigrants to Canada who don't really care about our veterans as those of us who are lifelong Canadians do.

For that matter, all of us are probably immigrants too, we just grew up as proud Canadians and most of us who aren't politically correct and don' t get our knickers in a knot appreciate where he is coming from. Stick to your guns Grapes I'm behind you 100%!

More from MacLean

“I want to address what happened last night on Hockey Night in Canada,” MacLean said. “Don Cherry made remarks which were hurtful, discriminatory — which were flat out wrong,” MacLean said.

“So, I owe you an apology, too. That is the big thing that I want to empathize. I sat there. I did not catch it. Did not respond.”

MacLean spoke about Indigenous leadership that says “recognition and acknowledgment” play a key role after a wrongdoing, “...and then you work on the relationship, so that it isn’t divisive, so that something can be a unifying event. Idle No More was a great lesson to all of us. Last night was a great lesson to Don and me. And I sincerely apologize and I want to thank you for calling me and Don on that last night.”

Nothing from Cherry yet?

Don’t forget MacLean made sure to emphasize it didn’t reflect the values of Rogers and Sportsnet.
