If Treliving sat on his wallet and decided not to sign James Neal for the big bucks (maybe signed Maroon for cheap instead) the team would have been better positioned to trade for and keep Stone imo.

Giving up Valimaki++ then selling Brodie and Frolik on the cheap would have absolutely gutted an already thin asset base. Without that $5.75M boat anchor (now $5.25M with a NMC) the Flames would have had all kinds of flexibility to add and keep Stone imo.

Having said that after the Hamilton trade I still really felt like the Flames needed an upgrade at forward but little did I know how good Lindholm would be and how much last years team would score.

It's unlikely that Rieder will be traded, but this is not uncommon at all.

The Flames did it last year with Kulak. The Flames put him on waivers on September 30. He cleared on October 1 and was traded to Montreal later that day.

Oh that's right, thanks. Now that you mention Kulak, I do remember other fringe players getting traded after clearing waivers. I think we acquired Huselius a few days after he cleared waivers in Florida too.

Anyway, I'm still just expecting a call-up like Gawdin or Phillips though.

There was one quote afterwards where Treliving said something about the ask being "Valimaki, Andersson, and a 1st". Do your sources corroborate that?

Why would the Sens be unwilling to budge from Valimaki, Andersson, and a 1st but accept Brannstrom and a 2nd from Vegas?

Because it's quite likely Treliving's package was less value and more expensive for the cheapest NHL owner than Brannstrom, Lindberg and a 2nd

I’m expecting that it will be Rinaldo who gets the call up. I think they want a spark to fire guys like Tkachuk, Bennett and Lucic up. If there’s a guy who can bring that spark like Hathaway did, it’s Rinaldo, he’s just not as good overall as Hathaway.

The Flames did not drop off over the summer - it happened at the All-Star break - which would be an even shorter timeframe.

Logically because they liked Brannstrom more

I think waiving Rider is more likely to inject some youth into the lineup, get some energy.
Come on, don't you know that every roster move is just the first domino in a machiavellian chain of transactions each more lopsided in the Flames favor than the last until the roster stands transformed and set to dominate the league for the next 5+ years?

Will the flames call up anyone before the game today? Or is it looking like we are going in with no spare forward on the roster?

Rieder can stay on the big club if he clears waivers.

Doesn't sound like Rieder practiced yesterday so I figure they'll send him down and bring someone up to be the 13th forward for tonight and maybe play on Thursday.

There is talk that might just be for roster flexibility and Rieder will stay up, which makes me wonder why he didn't skate yesterday.

Edit - And now seeing that he is there and will play tonight. Guess he was on the ice yesterday?

flames have been making some questionable decisions. Reider finally scores to get an immense monkey off his back, yet gets scratched the next game (albeit to make space for a healthy forward) and gets waived before trying to see if the goal reaps any boost in confidence in the player.

unless there is something bigger in play here, no idea what they are doing at the moment.

The whole organization at the moment is embodied by one of those inflatable flailing arm tube men.

I think you guys are over-reacting.
He is a fringe NHLer. Nothing more. Nothing less.
A single goal isn't going to change that.
Using this transaction as some sort of evidence of the team "flailing" is weird.

Looks like he's staying with the club, in the line rushes this morning. I suspect this is for roster flexibility, and I think we may see a trade after this road trip. Unless of course he's claimed.
