Yes, I agree there is room to grow as a pro for Janko, however, comparing the two players is not fair at all as Backlund barely played any North American hockey prior to sticking with the Flames. A few games with Kelowna and the Heat doesn't match up with the road Jankowski has taken.

I can still see him topping out as a 25g/25a two-way 2C.

Yep they could have taken the Oiler route and thrown him in the top 6 right away after he was drafted. Then we'd be here years later lamenting what a poor pick it was haha.
Just goes to show what a bit of patience can do with a player. Not everyone is ready for the NHL at 18, sometimes we have to remember that everyone develops differently and sometimes it just takes a little longer.

Not saying we should do this because I really like Backlund on this team, but it is a possibility.

The Flames better be getting more than mid-1st round draft pick if they traded Backlund. One of the best defensive centers in the league and can still give you 20 goals.

Part of me would be sad to see this team go on a run in Backlund's absence. No player loves the Flames more than he does, endured as much within the franchise as he has, and deserves success in this city.
Just say "No" to trading Mikael Backlund. I hope he retires in Calgary.

I'd be happy to see that as well. He's done pretty much everything you could ever hope for one of your players to do on and off the ice in terms of how he carries himself.
Plus I'd hate to have to find a replacement for my signed Backlund print on the wall, lol.

Looking at IHDB and copying to a spreadsheet, he's 23rd in PPG from that draft.
He's 9th in GPG.
http://www.hockeydb.com/ihdb/draft/nhl2012e.html
He's done that with limited icetime, and less than stellar linemates. I don't necessarily disagree with his place in the current lineup (I'd rather see him than Ryan on the PP though), but tend to think his scoring output is bound to increase as his role does.
He's a late bloomer for sure, so I don't think we're seeing his ceiling. There's clearly a lot of scoring talent.

Did you just make that up off the top of your head? Backlund in his 19 year old year played half the year in Sweden and half in the WHL. At age 20 he played mostly in the minors. He broke out offensively at age 24. Many on this board were down on him at age 21-23.
Your memory on that one is a bit off.

Thought we would revisit this thread instead of creating a new one.
So 2019-2020 Janko:
Multiple scratches this season. 0pts. -7.
Moving Lindholm to C basically means he's been pushed right off the depth chart. Is there even a spot for him anymore?
Does Janko still have a future with the Flames or is he another late 1st round pick that never materialized?

He's taken a step back this season. I don't see the Flames hanging on to him much longer. His penalty killing made him valuable last season but he's been brutal so far on the PK.

He hasn’t seemed to have earned his coach’s confidence in his play as a centre. Outside of PK, his average ice time per game must be very low. He seems too tentative in his play, and I think he needs a new home, with a different kind of coach.

Jankowski to me is a worse version of Colborne. Infuriating and frustrating as he should be using his body a lot more, and just does not have the hockey IQ needed for the NHL
He's a fringe NHL at best, and it's time to move on. He is 25, he's not getting any better.

Janko is weird to me. Skill set is there IMO but the compete level and give a #### meter is what is missing a lot of the time to me.
Visually I thought he's looked bad for the most part, but his line has also had some spurts where they can control the play in the offensive zone (Him, Quine, Czarnik had one really good game in particular).
Advanced stats actually like him so far this year in his very limited/sheltered role.
CF%: 56.8%
GF: 0
GA: 7
xGF%: 57.8%
XGF: 3.3
xGA: 2.4
Shooting %: 0
Save Percentage: .833 (Lowest on-ice save percentage on the team)
Personally I think trading him now would be a mistake since it would be in the middle of a horrible shooting percentage rate. Also I wouldn't mind the Flames trying him on the wing with Lindholm playing center now. He did play there in college at times, and really his big frame and body may work better along the boards.
Personally I think the NHL has shifted a bit where you no longer need to be a huge center ice man, but you need to be able to skate. And really now size may be better suited to the boards.
If they stick with the same line framework from last game.
Gaudreau - Lindholm - Tkachuk
Bennett - Monahan - Mangiapane
Jankowski - Backlund - Frolik
Lucic - Ryan - Rieder

I don't think that is just bad luck. Jankowski has been victimized by cross-ice passes through the slot this season and goalies are being forced to attempt spectacular saves with him on the ice.
