He's going to get over 30 goals. He's already almost 1/3 there half way in October.
Why is that a bad thing.
It wouldn’t have happened here. I’m looking forward to you running out of excuses as to why it would.
They’re putting him in an optimal position and he’s essentially replacing Chiasson's production gifting the Flames a 3rd.
Maybe Peters is a Babcock level goof, but they’re not shifting the organization to suit Neal, nor should they.
Whatever points the Oilers collect in October will be immensely valuable to keep they in that No Man's Land sweet spot of out of both the playoffs & a top 10 draft pick.

News (?): Refers to Bill "Babcock" Peters and tells a story about how him and James Neal celebrated the Leafs elimination from the playoffs (because of Babcock). Wonder if Neal has a similar Peters story to Commodore's Babcock story.

This is not exactly news. When the Flames hired Bill Peters Mike Commodore was openly and vocally critical of the decision. Rightly or wrongly he strongly dislikes Peters and I think this significantly clouds his judgment of his actual coaching skills.

Meh. Edmonton took a gamble and it looks like it is paying off. I'm not going to stress too much. Pretty much anyone can score playing with McDavid, if they want to pay Neal $6M for the pleasure, let them.
The big losers of this trade are the other teams that could have obtained Neal for free (or less of a dump than Lucic). You'd think teams like Ottawa or Columbus could have taken a risk.

Neal is also his buddy. I'm not saying it's news, just one guys opinion who happens to be on the radio in Calgary. I also don't think he's the only guy who doesn't like Peters for whatever that is worth.

Agreed. I just don't know how much weight I set in Commodore's very jaded opinion.

I look forward to seeing the larger body of work on Peters.
Carolina was full of question marks given the roster, Staal, and lack of results. Last regular season was good, but playoffs were terribly bad.

He’s got 8 now, but 6 are PPG. That’s 3/4. So to get 30 goals at the same pace, he needs to get 22.5 PPG. IIRC the only guys who’ve done that in the last 10 years or so are named Ovechkin and Stamkos.

Can we close this thread and start a James Neal in Edmonton thread? Every time I open CP I see the "trade" header and think the Flames have made a move. This is old news, so let's close this and move on to the next generation of hand wringing in an appropriate thread?

I like Peter's no-nonsense approach and it's hard to argue with the results of the regular season last year. That said he got badly outcoached in the playoffs and does appear to be one of those coaches that always has openings in the doghouse for players he doesn't like which is inline with how Babcock operates. At the end of the day the results are all that matter to me but I do worry about the core of this club tuning out coaches as they tuned out mean old Bob Hartley and nice guy Gulutzan both in short fashion following somewhat successful seasons.

You like Neal? You want Neal to succeed in Edmonton? You want to be right in this argument?
Why would you be looking forward to people that want Calgary to win or at least not lose a trade to run out of excuses?
I don't dislike Neal. Obviously I don't want him to succeed in Edmonton but I feel regardless of my feelings on the matter it's probably going to happen at least in the first year or two. I just feel some of you are in a state of denial about him. Brad Treliving never signed Neal for his play away from the puck 5 on 5. He signed him to be that elusive winger that could put the puck in the net as he's done his entire career. Obviously in year one things didn't work as planned but at least early he's back on track as the player he has always been. Many of you keep bringing up his 5 on 5 play, powerplay goals, skating, etc, etc ignoring the fact that like many one dimensional forwards he gets paid to score goals and he's doing that right now and there's no reason to believe that he's going to drift back to the player he was for the Flames last year as he's not the first player ever to have a bad season and bounce back to career norms.
