Money may not matter to the fans, but it is relevant to the owners.
Exactly in real dollars Lucic has $13M (less $2.25M Edmonton is paying) for $10.75M for the final three years.

Edmonton has $17.25M plus the $2.25M for $19.5M for the same time period.

Agreed.

I'm guessing from what Treliving said/didn't say after the trade that they've worked this out as much as you can in advance.

If they haven't you buy him out at that point, lose the cap space and save the lost asset that you'd forgo if he was protected.

Why wouldn't he? Also what forward are we worried about losing? Calgary almost certainly loses a dman

I agree that no one should be "positive", but the hints were certainly to the degree that I'm not all that worried about it.

Ya he also never even played an NHL game. And Savard was better then any other Center we have ever had since. Brutal.

He can be bought out though, I think we need to let that rest.

It doesn't bring huge cap savings, but if they want the guy off the roster they can certainly do it.

Calgary buying out Lucic in June for example would result in a cap hit of

4.8M
3.5M
4.8M
0.4M
0.4M
0.4M

compared to $5.25M for the first three.

If they do it prior to the expansion draft it would look like ...

3.5M
4.8M
0.6M
0.6M

Well yeah, they can also just send him to Stockton if they want too. Doesn't help the club more than minimum on cap savings however.

That is not the issue though. Its all about cap space and as you have clearly laid out, it really does little to help them in that area moving forward.

Just an albatross of a contract vs return. Maybe the worst in hockey and will continue to affect the team for at least 4 years.

This was a trade that took a lot of setting up. Iginla called Lucic to vouch for the organization. Lucic's NMC was essentially keeping him hostage in Edmonton - no matter where he went, there'd have to be a handshake deal that when the time came, Lucic would waive for the draft.

Lucic knows he's not going to be selected. He waives his NMC to return the favor to the team that gave him a fresh start.

With the expansion draft it's more than that.

You can buy him out and get him off the roster. To say he can't be bought out is wrong.

And it does save some cap ...

And at least four years? There is less than four years left now, are you speaking of residual trauma from the contract that rolls into the next season with Lucic gone? Or do see them extending him?

It has been hinted/suggested that to finalize the trade, the NMC was effectively made null and void.

At least that's how I understood it.

Lucic would have waived it for this trade. It would not be null and void.

I thought it was reported the Flames will honor the clause going forward. I wouldn’t be surprised if they worked out a deal where he waives for expansion but he won’t be waiving for Stockton.

I believe a NMC is only null and void after a trade if a player is traded before the contract even kicks in (like Visnovsky in Edmonton for example).

"Because it saved Murray Edwards cash" isn't a compelling argument for Lucic imo.

This year = 1 + 3 more...does that not total 4 in your world?

If they do buy him out, that gets extended, hence "at least"

What am i missing here?

OK, in that case the acquisition is indeed even worse, or at least has that possibility.

You said AT LEAST four years when there is less than four years left now (October almost gone in the fourth last year)

So no ... 6/7 + 3 = 3 6/7 not "at least four"

In my world.
