Ok well won't turn this off topic to crap on the dangerously incompetent CSA, but regardless of the fact of where the rugby team should be vs where they are as a team and an organization, they have got results when and against who they needed them, minnows or not, and are playing in the top tier tournament on the world stage.
That's some thing to build off of, and provides added exposure in this country of the game, if only minor, and I assume funding in the form of WC TV money; both of which are better situations than failing to be a part of it.

It’s the same situation they were in 4 years ago and 8 years ago, and only tripped their way into it rather than winning games they needed to win. They lost the games hey needed to win until they got to the point they were able to play games they couldn’t lose. No building has been happening, more like a managed decline while the likes of the USA and Uruguay are building. It’s unlikely repechage will ever be easier than it was this year, so qualifying for future Word Cups will only get harder.
Who knows where the funding is going, but it’s not being spent well.

Oct 10 - Eng v Aus
Oct 19 - NZ v Ire
Oct 20 - Wales v France
Oct 20 - Jap v SA
I think England, NZ, Wales & SA go through.
I think if the French the French can get it right on the day they can go through.
I think SA have far too much meat up front for the Japanese, and when SA pull from the bench there is no quality drop. Japan looked good against Scotland, but SA don't play defense lice Scotland.
Aussies do not have enough structure in their game to beat a well drilled England team. It could happen, but all 23 would need to have a blinder.
Ireland, yeah boys pack your bags.
All of this is thrown out the window if the officiating remains horrible.

I agree with your picks. Hopefully the games are close and we get an upset or two though. It will be interesting if the extra rest will help or hinder. Crazy Ireland NZ is a quarter final when many had that as the final.
The officiating was great in the Scotland Japan game. He was consistent in the breakdowns, kept the game moving, communicated well, and called penalties appropriately. The best part was when he basically told the TMO to bugger off on a high tackle saying the attacker went in low and there would be no penalty. If that is the standard for the finals we will be fine.

Yes, it was a well officiated game, which is why it flowed so well. That being said you won't see that official again, maybe as an A/R. He is the youngest at the tournament.
This World Cup has been ruined by the officials and their approach to Law interpretations. There have been some very poor cards handed out.

Well today’s quarterfinals were anti climatic. At least the NZ England semi should be good. Hopefully the games are closer tomorrow.

Eng v Aus
The game had some very good moments. It has been a while since an English side that been that able to take advantage of opposition mistakes.
Also White is horrible and should be strapped to a side of beef and throw to sharks.
NZ v Ire
That was the 4th place team in the world that was completely dismantled by NZ. I can't think of another team with the depth that NZ has.
Ireland didn't play well, but in fairness the AB's didn't give them a chance to play well.

I didn’t see the France Wales game
But can we talk about the horrible boring tactics of the Boks?
Japan deserves better on the day, Boks tactics were from 1985
If they play like that against NZ or the Pommies they will get smashed

Rugby noob question: Wales/France game - was red 21 not offside in creating the decisive try? He was ahead of the ball before it was even put in, and then certainly seemed offside in making the strip?
I'm not at all versed in the nuances of the scrum, but it stood out to me as different than usual...

The short answer is that scrum was a mess, if you listen to it again you can actually hear the ref tell red to "get behind him", which he does quickly.
But for the half-back the offside line isn't the player it is the ball. That strike looked super fast, coupled with the ongoing feeding of the scrum during this world cup, I don't think he was offside.
That loss is fully on the French, well their second row.

In sure they could care less about entertainment and I thought their tactics were spot on. They just ground them down. Nothing fancy. No need to. Simply overpowered them with strength. Job done.
Watching ireland NZ I couldn't be frustrated as simply in awe at the brilliance of the ABs and the gulfin class between the teams,

It was effective, no doubt, but there is no excuse for it. The SA player population is large enough that they could select a side that was able to playing running rugby and win. They simply decide not to do that.
If the Bok's play like that against the AB's I think they get smashed. Putting the ball into the hands of the back 3 of AB's is deadly.
I think the Boks will beat Wales, but if they try to out power NZ or England, they would be successful. Those are two teams with deep benches, hell if they take that approach with Wales they might come up short.
It is a horrible brand of rugby and should be an embarrassment to the nation that they play that style.
If I took a shot eveytime Barnes said "Use it" I would have alcohol poisoning.

Not fun to watch, but I expected nothing less from the Springboks. Why would they want to let Japan into the game after what happened in Brighton four years ago? I didn't find it surprising at all that they decided to grind them down.
The semis should be a couple really good games, but the All Blacks are just on another level at this point.

Yeah that's kind of my point.
For years they have shied away from players that push or facilitate an expansive running game.
Poor Heinrich Brussow.
I had hoped that the loss to Japan 4 years ago would have been used as a catalyst to drive a mentality change in SA rugby, create a new approach where they took the game to the opposition.

Semi's:
NZ v England
I think this is a close game. Defensively there isn't much to pick between the teams. Both run very aggressive D, but it is with the ball in hand that the difference happens. I don't see the Pommies being as dynamic as the Kiwi's.
Close game, NZ win by 3 to 7 points max.
SA V Wales
Also a close game (which is should be at this point). If the Leak eaters can get the ball to the open spaces and use it I think they have a chance. That being said everything needs to go right for them in the day. I don't think it will.
SA win by 1 to 3 points.
Hopefully both games turn out to be special.

Wow what a game! There wasn’t much separating the two teams but the English were exceptional in their execution of a field position game plan.
If England plays like that again next week Wales or South Africa won’t stand a chance.

I thought NZ had that game in the bag. They've just looked so good this tournament, but full credit to England for an outstanding performance!

A great great game
NZ were never in it.
England 4, 6, 7, 13 had their way with NZ.
A clear and utter ownership of that game.
All England have to do it maintain that level and the cup is theirs.
Great day for the sport
