Kings 4 Flames 3 (OT)
Kings 4 Flames 3 (OT)
- Tkachuk supplies the spark for comeback
- Calgary terrible through 30 minutes
- Bennett experiment lasts a handful of shifts
- Third pairing making strides
Sorry for the delay folks ... coaching two midget teams this winter so there will be a lot of late ones! Any writers out there that want to do a few games please let me know.

What does it mean? Not a whole lot. Calgary is still searching for the sixth member of the top six, and tonight they didn’t seem to find the answer as Sam Bennett lasted only a period on the second line before taking Andrew Mangiapane’s on the third line. He took both minor penalties, the last of which led to the King’s win in overtime.
Not a great showing, and not a legit opportunity either when it comes right down to it.

Im curious as to what is meant by this claim.

A handful of shifts is not a legit opportunity. There is little to dispute there.

Yeah, I suspect that, if the game wasn't looking to get out of hand, Peters gives Bennett a longer look there, even if he wasn't looking great right away.
That said, Mangiapane showed Bennett a thing or two about how to make an immediate impact when put on a line. Get the motor going, don't be timid.

No question - Mangiapane took his chance and ran with it.

I'm done crossing fingers and hoping for Bennett.
He's effective third liner, but has never made enough of his showings in the top six to stick.
But Bennett was a victim to the team dong a 30 minute face plant, not the player specifically. His penalties late came after the demotion.

Which is the bigger story.
Calgary may really have something there.

Really? The Mangiapane we have seen to start the season looks like a $715K player and a far cry from where he ended up last season. I've been pretty disappointed as I was anticipating a guy looking to prove something. I do not think we have seen anything remotely resembling that

As soon as he was put on the second line, the line scored a couple and he was part of it (though without points).

Even beyond that, the second line started to dominate possession in the offensive zone, and got plenty of chances with Mangiapane right in the thick of things. He was unlucky to not get an assist on the opening goal—which was the result of a turnover he created, and then another when he set Tkachuk up beautifully on the goal mouth, but which Tkachuk grazed just off the outside of the post.

The #Flames have played three games so far this season. In each of those games, Andrew Mangiapane has led the team in CF% at 5v5.
68.75% vs. the Avalanche
69.23% vs. the Canucks
64.52% vs. the Kings
He's first on the team and 15th overall in the NHL.
That's insane.

Going to be tough to pull Mangiapane off that line with Backlund and Tkachuk after his performance vs. LA. He swapped with Bennett to start the second.
With Mangiapane on the ice: 20-11 attempts (64.5% possession 5v5), 3-0 high danger chances. He looked really good. #Flames

Mangiapane could be a great fit on the 2nd line. He has a unique mix of skills, speed, creativity, and aggressiveness.

I have said a few times that I never had much faith in Mangiapane becoming an NHLer. And I have already stated how wrong I was on that. But it isn't just the talent level... what I find surprising, and fantastic, and I never imagined would be the case, is how feisty he plays. I mean, he's never going to be a power forward or anything, but he competes. He competes hard, every shift. And that raises the level of play of his line-mates.
I think he can become a really effective 2nd liner.

Mangiapane reminds me of a mix between Tyler Johnson and Brendan Gallagher.

He's a shorter, harder working Joe Colborne.

Plus he put that friggin' huge dude in a choke hold during a scrum later in the game. Guy was feeding Chucky crosschecks during a scrum, so 88 just jumped on his back and pulled him off.
I thought that was great.

Chucky actually made mention of that in an interview. And how much he appreciated it.

This is almost exactly what I thought. I thought he was a bit overhyped by some posters and his first trips up here were confirming my thoughts. But I've come around completely. I think he's benefited by leading his team in the AHL and also by playing with and learning from Ryan and, to a degree, Hathaway, who made a lot of their ice time.
