Default Derogatory Words

just sitting back pondering. how come its ok for some people to use derogatory terms to describe groups of people and not others?

I do believe the guy's name was richard - the guy on survivor #1, i think he might have won it too. constantly referred to himself as the "fat naked f&g". anyone else uses that word and they're homophobic.

"q*&%r eye for the straight guy". use the word q$#@r in a conversation if you're not a homosexual and its not politically correct.

same goes for other groups of people - listen to rap music - plenty of racial slurs against both blacks and whites. nobody really cares.

why is it that there are certain words only certain people are allowed to say? oh - and yes, i censored the words in my post myself in hopes that i won't get banned

Because people are to damn sensative and they feel that if someone says something like that.....they are saying it in hate....not in jest.

People need to get a little thicker skin.

I think it's a coping mechanism.

For example, let's say I call myself and my family a bunch of crackers. If a person of another race calls my family and I crackers... meh.

It's like on Seinfeld when that dentist converted to judiasm for the jokes.

i could understand it being a respect issue if the words were said as an insult or if it wasn't considered acceptable for ANYONE to use those words... but why can only some people can use them?

This thread has no good and 8 pager then lock written all over it.

This type off issue is fine to discuss amongst people you trust, but the Internet has a way of snowballing things - and not in the direction you want.

You're right...it goes both ways....but lets be honest here....the politically correct group I think has gone way off the scale on one side and just needs to chill out.

Well I think that's true but only on an individual case by case interpretation. Some words I find ignorant, other ones not so much. Perhaps that's the answer to Phaneuf's question.

Some people are offended by some words, other people aren't.

Oh for sure. I called a couple guys "fags"the other day and they got pretty angry. They couldn't tell I was joking, which is understandable I guess because I was driving pretty fast. But still, toughen up boys. It's just a word.

everyone always assumes that you're using it in the most offensive way possible. and people that it doesn't offend will often get offended on behalf of someone that might be offended by it. it gets to the point of being ridiculous sometimes. if i asked:
"can i bum a fag?"
a lot of people would likely flip out; but all i'm doing though is asking if i can have one of your cigarettes.

I once made fun of some chinese people by saying "me so solly, me slanty eye, rice farmer..." as I used my fingers to make my eye slanty.

Except not everyone knows that smokes are called fags in England.

Kind of off topic, but my personal favorite (and by that i mean peeve) is when a rapping, gang violence obsessed, degrading lyrics drug user wins an award...and the first thing he or she does is thank God for getting them to where they are.

Yes, that's much worse than a singing, violence obsessed, incomprehensible lyrics drug user wins an award. Damn rappers.

If they get offended by it then it doesn't really mean they are people "it doesn't offend".

Why is this even an issue? Do you feel a pressing need to use "******" and "******" in everyday conversation?

Yeah that was my next point. Why do you need to use the terms in the first place. Clearly when referring to a person who you think is an idiot, there are MANY suitable terms that aren't crossing any racial or "politically correct" sensitive lines.

but that's the thing, i don't use those words in that way.
i was friends with a guy back in high school that would often refer to himself as a f%g. not a big deal - nobody in my circle of friends got offended by it - he was comfortable using it. once in a conversation with another one of our mutual friends, i made the mistake of referring to him as a f%g - meaning he was a homosexual male - and damn i got a strip torn off me.

I just try to be as un-politically correct as possible, that way I cover all the bases.
