Frolik definitely wasn't good, but Jankowski cost us the game IMO.

Janko is normally an asset shorthanded, but he caused 2 goals against because he allowed 2 cross-crease passes right through him.

Bennett should be in Frolik's spot on the 2nd line, and I'd rather see Rieder on the 4th, or Dube in Jankowski's 4th line C spot even.

The first period was abysmal but you get the sense from where things were headed in the final 40 for the Flames that they're on their way to figuring out how to be a good team again.

Was mad earlier, but not mad now that it's all said and done. There were more redeeming things to take away from this opener than most Flames openers have offered. Hanifin, Lucic, the top 4 players creating offence, Bennett, Rittich.

Nothing wrong with Brodie on that last play. Useless puck management by a panicking Backlund turned a offensive zone possesion into a needless 50 50 puck battle.

Backlund also in the box for the gwg.

Really liked:

Rittich
Bennett
Hanifin
Giordano
Lucic (for sticking up for Czarnik)

Would like to see Rieder and Dube in the lineup (Czarnik and Jankowski out, Frolik on the 4th line)

Liked the effort. Brutal call that resulted in the 4th goal, and a high stick that resulted in the 3rd goal, makes this one taste bitter. But the effort and the emotion were there. Maybe this game gets them off to a good start.

Brodie just needs to play body in the last play. Somehow he always tries to play the puck.

I hate the loss. However I appreciate the effort. There were 2 very questionable penalties that gave Colorado advantage.

It’s not a loss where I’m questioning the teams skill, heart or future direction.

I really wonder if Treliving might ask Rob Blake about Tyler Toffoli in the coming weeks.

The Kings are short on defensemen.

Game 1 of 82.

pp got some goals
Top line got on the boards early
Gio doing Gio things
Big Save Dave looking in mid season form
Lucic and Benny and Chucky will add some needed sandpaper
Hanifin looks better and more confident
Hamonic playing like a warrior

All in all, the Flames looked like they were going to tie it up, which after the 1st didn't seem like it was in the cards.

Avs are just a tough match up for Calgary, so not too upset (except with the refs)

If the flames make a 'all in' trade this year, it had better be to improve upon the center position.

Monahan
New guy
Backlund
Ryan/Jankowski

Really need to upgrade that second line.

Some good and bad tonight, but overall another tough opener. Hopefully they can find their game on Saturday and put this one behind them.

Rough and rusty start. Good 2nd half of the game. Curse is real, might need a Jobu next year. Whole team was definitely was in preseason passing game form. You could see the skill was there but when you can't string any passes together, not gonna end well.

Frolik had negative impact with and without the puck, rough game.
Tkachuk looking amazing for being slightly rusty.
Hanafin is looking great so far, could be a breakout season for him.
Kylington totally took me by surprise that game. 3rd pairing looks awesome, besides the expected rookie mistakes.
Janko looked completely overwhelmed and aloof.

Flames don't have much work to do IMO. Work on better man to man coverage foooorsure and cleaning up the passing game.

Everyone needs to relax with the Frolik hate. It's one game. The 3M line is great together and they will be better. The flames need him playing well if they are ever going to trade him.

Kadri, Brown, Zucker over Janko, Brodie, Frolik would probably look pretty nice right now.

But those guys will probably be better in the coming games too.

Bennett for opportunities tonight, same story as usual.

Tkachuk found him right in the slot, in stride, uncovered.

Puck rolled off his stick, couldn't accept the pass.

Tkachuk needs a real top 6 player to play with, not something cobbled together.

I love backlund as much as the next fan, but this team needs a more offensive 2C. Been saying it for 1.5 years now. We would be amazing if backlund and frolik were part of a third line.

Imagine Tkachuk on a line with Kadri and Zucker if those trades hadn’t been nixed?

Can't believe how badly the flames got ####ed over with these trades falling through this year.

Just brutal
