Flames October 1 -- Flames final roster moves

https://twitter.com/user/status/1179075673320652801

Rinaldo, Quine, and Dube sent to Stockton and MacDonald released from his PTO.

All signs point to Kylington making the opening night roster.

Excellent.

I am very excited for Kylington to be in the lineup on opening night. This is a big gesture of confidence from the coaching staff.

Really felt like MacDonald played his way off the team in that last game with Edmonton.

He wasn’t actually looking too horrible before then, though his past body of his work suggested he likely wouldn’t have been able to sustain it.

Will be interesting to see what pairings they go with on Thursday

Giordano - Brodie
Hanafin - Hamonic
Kylington - Andersson

or

Giordano - Andersson
Hanafin - Hamonic
Brodie - Stone

All in all the PTOs were a good move, I don't mind the portable cheap depth options they added at all.

Happy to be wrong. Thought for sure MacDonald was going to make it regardless of his poor showings. Seasons starting off on the right foot. Except for Backlund. Pun intended.

Please god not Brodie on the left again.

Personally I think it will be this on the road in Game 1 where they won't have the matchups:

Giordano - Andersson
Hanafin - Hamonic
Brodie - Stone

And then this at home in game two when they can shelter the 3rd pair a little more:

Giordano - Brodie
Hanafin - Hamonic
Kylington - Andersson

And could see that being a trend to start the year.

After all the off-season squabbling the Flames start the season with a 22 man roster and $154,958 in cap space. All thanks to that little bit of room the Oilers made by retaining Lucic's cap hit.

Nice, glad they went with Kylington over MacDonald. Hopefully Dube gets a call back up before too long.

Glad to hear we didn't bite on MacDonald. He was pretty weak throughout most of the preseason, and got exposed badly in his last game on multiple plays. His experience didn't help him much. I think Yelesin is probably a better player at this point. He just needs some seasoning in the AHL.

  5. Gaudreau
  6. Jankowski
  7. Lindholm

  9. Mangiapane
  10. Monahan
  11. Rieder
  12. Ryan
  13. Tkachuk

DEFENCE
  1. Andersson
  2. Brodie
  3. Giordano
  4. Hamonic
  5. Hanifin

I always thought that MacDonald (and Gryba) was signed to a PTO mainly to provide extra hands for the pre-season so that the regulars can rest up. I never thought they could get a contract from the Flames, since Michael Stone was signed and the team already has a headache trying to carry 7 D. If Valimaki is not out for 10 months I don't think Stone will even be re-signed, let alone signing more defencemen from PTO.

Brodie played on the left side with Michael Stone when he was first acquired, and that pair looked fine. It is not unrealistic to think that with limited deployment they can do it again.

One possible concern to watch...

https://twitter.com/user/status/1179074057481777153

Backlund skated on his own before practice in a yellow "no contact" jersey. We'll get an update on his status after practice.

If he's expected to miss any time, one of Dube or Quine's trip to Stockton might be a short one.

If Backlund can't play on opening day, top 6 could look like this

Gaudreau-Monahan-Lindholm/Tkachuk
Tkachuk/Bennett-Lindholm/Bennett/Ryan-Frolik

That was my prediction in the opening night roster thread. I could also see Stone draw in against heavier teams at home / Kylington play against faster teams on the road as well.

Calgary loves to not hand the keys to the kids right off the get go, but my expectation is that Kylington will earn a larger share of the ice time than Stone over the course of this season. He was quite good in the bottom pairing role for the half of last season he was in the lineup.

As mentioned in the other thread, MacDonald was likely offered some kind of a contract by the Flames but they couldn't come to an agreement. If there was no talk of a contract he likely would have been released earlier.

About the roster, well, they really kept the gang together.

Neal -> Lucic, Smith -> Talbot, Hathaway -> Rieder. Hopefully Lucic is an upgrade and Talbot is not a downgrade. Rieder seems like a lateral move, which is perfectly fine.

I expect plenty of line shuffling again to start the season, there's so many different ways you could organize those forwards.

Kylington, Andersson and Hanifin all being a year older should improve our defense, even if Gio takes a step back.

MacDonald released, Bennett at centre... I must be dreaming

This is the danger with weighing PTO camp tryout performances against AHL lineups too heavily. I'm sure vets know better than young players how to "be a good pro," work hard, and earn coach points over a few weeks, but it means very little for their impact over the long term. Case in point, Grossmann in 2016

Is Bennett a placeholder, or will he actually centre the second line on Thurs?
