I typically SN radio at work and switched to 590 at 10AM to catch HC@noon and today I learned it has moved to a 2 hour time slot so it will bridge the Rome gap on 960

Wow is anybody listening to the season preview on 960?
This Toronto based guy is the biggest homer I've heard in my life. Dragged on the leafs talk forever, including a gem where he says "yeah Dubas signed Marner for probably too much, but at the end of the day he's still a leaf!" like losing the negotiation but still getting him inked was a huge success to be applauded. Then the discussion finally moves to Tampa (TO guy snorts in the background when Pat tries to change the topic) and after Pat names them the team to beat in the east/Atlantic (and rightfully so), TO guy chimes in to declare that he's pretty sure its actually Toronto.
After he gets his homer spiel in, Pat states again that Tampa is "unquestionably" the team to beat.
Huge brownie points to Patty.
These Toronto milkers out east are truly nauseating though. I'm glad we're not close to all that noise.

Toronto has always treated their signings like a popularity contest. They hear a big name and sign them, and don’t care how they will fit into the lineup. And then spend the remainder of the off season bragging about how good the team will be the next season. We have a slightly watered down version of that here in Alberta, with the oilers media, journalists.

Leafs media has always been insufferable. If the Leafs are losing they mercilessly rip the players, coaches, management, and when they are winning they are planning the parade. Very little in between.

THN has a great article about how Toronto overspent again.

All summer we waited for the Marner contract to be done, thinking that it would set the market for the other players. Didn’t happen. It’s like the Leafs were playing under one set of rules and everyone else under another. So when the trade deadline comes and the Leafs have no cap room to supplement their roster for the playoffs, you’ll be able to point directly back to GM Kyle Dubas’ machinations this off-season as the culprit.

All told, for each of the next five seasons, the Maple Leafs will devote $29.5 million in cap space to Marner, Auston Matthews and William Nylander. The top-three paid players on their second contracts average $12.9 million for the 28 other teams in the NHL that have them... The only team that is even close to the Leafs are the Edmonton Oilers at $27 million for Connor McDavid, Leon Draisaitl and Ryan Nugent-Hopkins. Discuss amongst yourselves which three players you’d rather have on your team.
Better yet, ask yourself whether you’d rather devote $29.5 million in cap space to Matthews, Marner and Nylander or have Matthew Tkachuk, Johnny Gaudreau and Sean Monahan for more than $9 million less ($20.1 million)

All that, and hey have yet to win a playoff series. At least the Oilers did that much before they blew their cap.

I don't dislike it, I just think it's odd..I actually didn't realize it was an old school thing, I thought they just thought they were being funny or something haha.
And this time of year is nice, outside of just hockey starting..it begins a 5 month span when I actually enjoy listening to Rome as it's heavily NFL-focused. Once that season ends, Rome is useless to me.

The "toronto based guy" is former Leaf GM Gord Stellick.
And not sure what you were hearing, but he picked the Bolts to win the Stanley Cup.
I only caught the last 10 minutes or so this morning, but they all have Colorado going deep.
Walker had the Stars winning the West but missed who he had winning it all.
Steinburg has the Capitals winning it all over the Knights.

Except that we are.
It’s called Edmonton.
Think for a second if they had a season like we did last year...
They’re delusional blowhards with repeated incompetent failure.
Imagine if they made the playoffs 3 years in a row like the Leafs?

Yeah I often listen to Stellick in the mornings on the car’s satellite radio. I think he’s quite good.

Geez I guess I’m just bitching now, but listening to Wills salivate about Tkachuk and Lucic rooming together at a team building event and how incredibly fascinating it is. Guess I just don’t find room assignments all that scintillating but whatever.

On the surface (removing Wills from the equation) it is kind of fascinating. I mean, just last year Lucic threatened to kill Tkachuk. Treliving, the mad genius, puts them together to become fast friends.

Tkachuk: “so when I piss people off, will you beat them up?”
Lucic : “Sure kid”.

No Wills is frequently gross. He's trending towards an "Oiler analyst" level of nauseating to listen to.
I believe Boomer and Rhett believed the same, with Rhett once commenting on how he would never say anything negative about the team.
I think it's telling how Peter was a regular feature in the 7-9 timeslot and they punted Wills out after it was apparent he was at best useless and at worst terrible.
He's probably so useless that he scours forums like this worried about what people think instead of bettering his craft.

This is a little over the top don't you think? I get that some of you aren't fans but the guy gets paid to be a homer as the Flames pay attention. Barkley and Rogers were replaced for telling it like it is so I have no issue with a person doing their job in accordance with what is expected by the team. For the record Maher was never overly critical of the Flames. He may agree with his color man that they were bad after a game but you would never hear him put a negative spin on the team. It's part of the reason why he was not a great insider.
