He can be out in 4 years. I re-iterate: Worst case scenario with this contract.

I agree.

Not a fan of this scenario.

Expensive for the term, but I'm not going to quibble over a few hundred K. The benefit is that the shorter term means a lower absolute number. Things are going to be wild in 3 years because there are going to be a bunch of big names coming due league wide. Two and three years ago, everyone was doing 5 and 6 year deals. Now a bunch of 3 year deals. Over the course of a couple of years, in a few years, the entire league is going to be turned upside down. It will be interesting to watch.

As for the team, glad it's over, and they don't need to move anyone. This buys Treliving flexibility with respect to Brodie, Hamonic and Frolik. They obviously can't re-sign all 3, but now they can make decisions without a gun to their head.

That is funny that some early reports came from Andy Strickland. When Francis had the scoop on Point, I was going to jokingly mention someone should ask Strickland what he was hearing.

High fives to everyone who had 3x6 in the poll thread. The closest answer to correct!

I still believe they make a trade. That's an awfully thin amount of space for cap flexibility. I think they might actually want to make room for Bennett up in the top 6. So Frolik is my guess.

This certainly does seem to show the shift that the completely restricted years still will allow a player to make a pretty good salary. But than again, chances are the 3 most productive years of Tkachuck's career will be his next 3 years.

This does fit my theory where you have your best players signed for 3 years at managable numbers, so now is when you go for it, and the team will have options to move a few good assets with another year of team control to reload if they need to.

Start the season with Dube in the minors, Oct 3 Valimaki goes to LTIR and they have like $1.7M in space. Call him up, or * gulp * Rieder (once he signs, of course)

Would have liked to see a bit less AAV but overall it's not too bad I guess. I think the fears of him walking to free agency are a bit overblown, they'll be discussing an extension in 2 years and have 2 years to get it done.

Worse cases:

-Tkachuk refuses to sign with the Flames at all

-Tkachuk signs an 8 year/$9 million AAV deal and suffers a career ending injury in year 2

Am I to take from this that Tkachuk is not on his way to another team?

Brad is a good negotiator. I'd hate to have to sell him a car.

To me, worst case scenario would be not having Tkachuk on the team after trading away a player to clear cap space because Tkachuk somehow managed to sign somewhere else for less.

I guess the very worst scenario would be if Tkachuk somehow ended up an Oiler

Tkachuk will stay with the Flames after this deal if the team has success over the next 3 years.

Gio, Johnny, and Tkachuk are all up at the same time.

Let's all prepare to not draft in the 1st round for two of the next three years. The window is open.

The only contract that this is worse than is Point IMO. Factoring in taxes and the discount players take to play in that market I’d say this is a really good contract. Fair for both parties.

Unfortunately living in Canada getting taxed out the whazoo and living in Florida with no state tax is not apples to apples. Just the reality of being a small market Canadian team.

Love this bridge deal, it's what I always thought would happen. It makes perfect sense, this team has a window as long as Gaudreau is here which is three more years. You sign Tkachuk to a bridge deal over that time to keep the cap hit low, and at the end of that period you re-evaluate the team. Another smart move by BT.

GM's don't need to do this, it's part of the negotiation process.

It actually make sense if you consider that you'd expect a players salary to raise as he reaches his prime. Having Tkachuk qualified at $9M is likely where his market would be at that time.

Gio will be staring at retirement and Johnny possibly leaving and Tkachuk possibly with one year left with the team. You flip those picks for rentals then these three players are all gone in 3/4 years and the Flames will be opening up their new arena with what looks like a 90's expansion team.

Last Season:

Tkachuk 34 goals, 44 assists, 78 points (11 ppg, 24 ppp) 17:36 TOI/PG
Point 41 goals, 51 assists, 92 points (20 ppg, 30 ppp) 18:55 TOI/P

Tkachuk had 108 minutes less ice time than point and Tkachuk puts up a point for every 18:30 seconds on the ice which would give Tkachuk 6 more points if he had as much time as point which would give him 36G, 47A for 84 points to Points 92.

So 8 less points but brings an element to the game that Point does not. Give me Tkachuks #### disturbing element over an extra 8 points over the course of the season.

Also Tkachuk drew 42 minor penalties last year to Points 22.

This contract is fine.

If he elects to go to arbitration, don't the Flames have the option of selecting a 2 year term or am I remembering that wrong?

Either way, I'm okay with this deal. Over the next three years we'll get a better chance to see exactly what we have in him. He's a fantastic player but it's not a foregone conclusion that he will repeat or better his point totals from last season. Not saying I don't think he'll continue to be a great player going forward, but it's not the worst thing to see him string a couple of these together first before dishing out max AAV on a long term deal.

We have no cap space for the 1sts to be used on.

This is the perfect time to be using those 1st round picks and develop cheaper players internally to replace those coming off contracts.
